Research Impact
In response to the developments and pressing issues of commerce, economics, and management in a global VUCA world, the Department of Commerce, MAHE, Manipal pulls out all the stops in our pursuit of contributing knowledge through perspective-building, problem solving and conceptualisation in our research outputs, with a focus on an interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approach. In alignment with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, the crux areas of research undertaken by the department include banking, insurance, finance, public health expenditure and risk analysis, energy costs, financial inclusion, financial markets, marketing, rural marketing, digital marketing, neuromarketing, sales, customer behaviour, logistics, supply chain, corporate governance and ethics, human resource management, well-being, mindfulness, education, e-learning, virtual reality, blockchain, machine learning, knowledge management, business, economics, health economics, entrepreneurship, business start-ups, family business management, hospitality, tourism, sustainability and rural development.
In addition to pooling resources with other institutions under MAHE such as MIM, MCOPS, MIT, PSPH, KMC, and PHESA, the Department works in close collaboration with industry, and with national and international researchers and institutions. The department has collaborated with 51 national and global universities/institutions in over 15 countries. Some of these are Kingdom university, University of Craiova, University of Edinburgh, University of York, European council for small business (ECSB), and Burgundy School of Business at the international front and IIM Bangalore, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, IIT Madras, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, IIT Kharagpur, HRIDAY Delhi, and VIT Business School on the national front.
Working together with all stakeholders, the department has published research work in quality, peer-reviewed and SCOPUS-indexed journals with 11 publications in ABDC journals, 26 in Q1 and Q2 journals, and 13 in Q3 and Q4 journals. The Department leaves a footprint on the research community with 96 publications, 376 citations, average yearly h index of 10, and a high altmetric and plumx metrics score. Research conducted by the department includes qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods empirical research, systematic reviews, bibliometric analysis, among others. Our researchers present their work at various national and international conferences. In 2021-2022, 5 of our researchers won the best paper award at different international conferences
The Department has 8 approved guides, 26 Ph.D. qualified faculty members, 9 faculty members pursuing Ph.D. outside the department and 11/13 pursuing part-time Ph.D. at the department. The Department is also home to 22/23 full-time research scholars, most of whom are funded by Dr. T.M.A. Pai scholarships or UGC-NET JRF fellowships. Six centres have been established by Manipal University in the Department of Commerce with the objective of strengthening the research and consultancy activities of the Department
