History

Manipal Institute of Virology (MIV), Manipal is a centre for diagnostic virology and research activities formerly known as Manipal Centre for Virus Research (MCVR). It is the regional reference laboratory for Influenza viruses and an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Grade I Virus Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) supported by the Department of Health Research (DHR) and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India (GOI).

The institute also hosts the APEX Referral Laboratory for Arboviruses conferred by National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP). The MIV is an excellent example of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) in public health virology.

The department also supports and conducts timely outbreak investigations along with the state Public Health services and produces trained virologists through its MSc and PhD programs.
