Exploring energy conservation in office buildings with thermal comfort criterion towards sustainable new developments in warm and humid climate
2017 Sustainable Development, Energy efficiency in buildings Pradeep Kini NK Garg, K Kamath
As a case study, a six storey office building in Manipal in Coastal Karnataka, India is documented and simulated for indoor thermal comfort analysis. Various building envelope design strategies are examined in order to improve indoor temperatures and conserve energy towards sustainable new developments in warm and humid climate.

2017 Building envelopes; Commercial building; Environmental performance Pradeep Kini NK Garg K Kamath
This paper investigates the overall heat gain through building envelope components and natural ventilation in warm and humid climate region through experimental and simulation methods towards improved thermal environmental performance.
Optimization based feasibility study for filler slabs as a response towards the ECBC roof compliance with respect to thermal transmittance for five climatic zones of India
2020 energy conservation; filler material; insulation; optimization; u value RR Acharya, P Kishore, M Raghuprem Pradeep Kini S Shetty
This optimization model produces the optimum choice for filler material in different cases based upon the variables and associated constraints. In the cases where the solution cannot be derived, it is deduced that filler slabs alone are not feasible to be used as a solution for the ECBC compliance.
Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) based optimum wall composition with respect to thermal transmittance and thickness for different commercial pockets of Tier-1 city in temperate climatic zone of India
2020 ECBC; evolutionary optimization; external wall; selling price S Shetty P Kishore Pradeep Kini RR Acharya Anupam Raj
The various wall compositions achieved, as the result of an evolutionary optimization is made compliant with ECBC 2017 standards to obtain the best possible optimized external wall solution. The increase in the percentage of carpet area/ sellable area as a result of optimization of the external wall was used to calculate the percentage increase in the profit per square metre area of construction. As a final result of the optimization, the selling price of the commercial building is maximized.
Optimization based feasibility analysis for Energy Conservation Building Code compliance of opaque wall assemblies in different climatic zones of India
2020 Building; Climate; Code; Conservation; Energy; Sustainable Pranav Kishore Pradeep Kini Anupam Raj
This research uses the evolutionary optimization model for the feasibility analysis of ECBC and incremental ECBC code compliance, in various climatic zones of India towards wider acceptability by the building industry with respect to the thermal transmittance of opaque wall assemblies in building envelope for different typologies of commercial buildings using the available materials in the Indian context / market.

Sustainable Communities and Integrated Design Approach towards Development of Smart Cities
2016 Pradeep Kini
Indian economy is currently the third largest in the world in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) and this is projected to grow further in the next two decades with ongoing urbanization and infrastructure development. Cities play an important and critical role in the development of the nation. The design and construction industry has started to embrace an ecologically friendly approach to architectural design since the last decade with considerable work on individual green buildings in urban areas

aims at studying various approaches to further enhance the energy production of the modelled building after attaining the ECBC minimum requirement. PVGIS system is used to assess parameters such as PV technology used, integration of the panels, system loss, year to year variability, tilt angles of the panels. Further, shadow analysis of the optimal angle to maximize energy production is analysed. A comparative study between the modelled building and the PVGIS system on the panel cost and payback period is conducted. Based on the optimum tilt and azimuth angles, shadow analysis and daylighting analysis is carried out. The paper provides an understanding of the optimal integration style of the BIPV panels on the building facade.

The implementation of ECBC prescriptive requirements is found to reduce energy consumption by 15.86% in the baseline case. Further implementation of Design Alternatives (DA) in the building envelope achieved a reduction in overall annual energy consumption by 32.31%.
