MCODS, Manipal celebrates 50th College Day and Awards Ceremony – 2015

Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal celebrated its Annual College Day and Awards Ceremony on March 7’ 2015.

The chief guest for the function was Dr E Munirathnam Naidu, the first vice chancellor of Meenakshi University, Chennai. Dr Betsy Thomas, Professor and Head Department of Periodontics introduced Dr Naidu to the august gathering. Dr Naidu, an alumnus of Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal had obtained his Post- graduate degree in Prosthodontics from this institute. In his message to the students, he congratulated them for joining this prestigious institution. He advised the students that graduation was a license to heal and that perfection in care does not need money. He encouraged the graduates to attend conferences, workshops and CME’s to update their knowledge continually. Dr Naidu urged the graduates to develop strategies to treat patients in a holistic manner and to pay attention to involving soft skills in their practice.

Miss Aalisha Kanodia was as the best outgoing student of the year 2014. The class toppers of the outgoing batch were Ms Aalisha Kanodia and Mr Lim Boon Loey.

 

The Meritorious students, class and subject toppers for all the four years of the BDS course were recognized and awarded.  Students with hundred percent attendances, the students who participated in the republic day parade and the students who received awards for their innovative work were recognized. 

The response from the graduates was given by Mr Meeraj Alam and Miss Aalisha Kanodia. The student council report was given by Miss Vartika Kumari.

Dr Aparna I N, Associate Dean and Professor Department of Prosthodontics proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Rashmi Nayak, Professor and Head, Department of Pedodontics and Dr Vidya Saraswathi, Professor and Head Department of Conservative dentistry compeered the entire program in a wonderful manner. The program concluded with some light entertainment performed by the students of the college.

Dr Keerthilatha M Pai, Associate Dean welcomed the gathering.  Dr Nirmala N Rao, Dean MCODS Manipal presented the annual institution report. Dr Rao traced the journey of the institution over the last 50 years. She high lightened the research activities, accomplishments of the students and faculty and the events that were hosted by the institution. She also announced the innovation the students and faculty of the institution had generated; such as the surgical glove for educating patients, a portable device for dental therapy and a mobile dental unit. She also mentioned that the future goals of the institution were to improve the infrastructure of the institution by expanding the Post graduate clinic, to be a training centre for MFDS and to open a tobacco cessation and intervention center.

 

The guest of honor for the event was Pro-Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Dr V Surendra Shetty. He was introduced by Dr Shashi Rashmi Acharya, Professor of Department of Conservative Dentistry. In his address to the graduates, he advised them to focus on research activities that would help in managing oral diseases.  He encouraged the students to set up practices in rural areas. Dr Shetty also mentioned that at a particular point it was necessary to unlearn and relearn.

 

The college day also marked the beginning of the year-long golden jubilee celebration of the institution. To inaugurate this a logo was released by Dr Munirathnam Naidu and Dr V Surendra  Shetty, Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Mrs Ramdas M Pai and Dr Surjit Singh Pabla Vice Chancellor of Mathura University.

During the program, the official publication of the Manipal Branch of the Indian Dental Association “Manipal Odontoscope” was released. Dr Ramprasad Associate Professor, Department of Public health dentistry rendered a brief overview of the publication.

Dr Shruthi Acharya, Assistant Professor, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology was recognized as the good teacher for the year 2014. Dr Vasudev Ballal, Additional Professor, Department of Conservative and endodontics was recognized for being selected as a reviewer for the journal of conservative dentistry.  Dr Lokendra Gupta and Dr Siddharth Mehta were recognized for designing a logo for the Unesco Chair and the coverpage for the brochure of Manipal Academy of Higher Education respectively.
