Theme: “Treat Obesity Now and Avoid the Consequences Later”

As a part of world obesity day 2017, Health Awareness and Screening Programme was organized on 16th October 2017, by IV year BSc Nursing students and the Dept. of Community Health Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing Manipal, at Athrady Anganawadi.

Worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. It is estimated that over 650 million were obese. In most of the world's population, overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight. About 41 million children under the age of 5 years were overweight or obese and 340 million children and adolescents aged 5-19 years were overweight or obese in 2016 (WHO, 2017).

Mrs. Susheela, President, Cooperative Milk Society, Athrady, Mrs. Jayanthi,   Anganwadi Teacher, Mrs. Kanthi, Asha worker, Dr. Malathi G Nayak, Asst. Professor and Mrs. Manjula, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Community Health Nursing were present during the programme. 

World obesity day theme was described by Mrs. Manjula and highlighted on different treatment modalities such as Physical activity, life style & diet modification, medication, surgical intervention and preventive measures to avoid the consequences of obesity. Health talk on the consequences of obesity was delivered by Dr. Malathi G Nayak. She has explained on how obesity causes cardiac and liver disorders, cancer, depression, infertility.  

Following the health talk on obesity, the exercises were demonstrated by the IV year BSc Nursing students and pranayama by Dr. Malathi G Nayak. Redemonstration of exercises and pranayama were performed by the participants. A role play on the theme was performed by the IV year BSc Nursing students.

The Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure and Random blood Sugar (RBS) was assessed. The games for the participants also were conducted during the programme. A total of 30 participants from self-help group, other members of the community and schoolers attended the programme. The programme was coordinated by Mrs. Manjula, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Community Health Nursing, MCON Manipal.
