Teachers’ Day is celebrated as a tribute to the valuable contributions made by teachers to the society by imparting knowledge and enlightening, as well as shaping the future of their pupils. For students, Teachers’ Day is an occasion to pay reverence and gratitude to their faculty for their selfless efforts in contributing to their success and enriching the education system in the process.

On the 6th of September, the students of WGSHA, DOCA and DAHS organized various events throughout the day for the teachers by entertaining them, expressing their gratitude through mediums of music, drama and food, and helped them unwind from their strenuous schedule.

The senior students decided to help the teachers cut a break from their daily routine by taking the regular classes for students of the 1st and 2nd year. This ensured that the teachers would have time to themselves to enjoy all the events that were to follow without disturbing the academic calendar.

At 11:30am, the faculty members were invited to the students’ training restaurant, Chaya in Fortune Inn Valley View Hotel for the annual cake cutting ceremony where the Principal and Vice Principal along with the teachers cut an Opera cake that was made by the Mad Over Baking (MOB) Club and the students of DOCA.

To catalyze the entertainments for the day, three rounds of an antakshari competition were held where in the teachers attempted to guess the names of popular movies after seeing stills from the movie in the first round, recognized old, classic songs upon hearing a snippet of it in the second round, and lastly, participated in a vocal antakshari round where forgotten songs and melodies were brought back to life. The atmosphere was fun-filled and pleasurable rather than competitive.

Soon after the antakshari session, a special audiovisual presentation prepared by the students were shown to the teachers, to take them down memory lane and to create a memorable afternoon.

After the entertainment session for the afternoon concluded, a special lunch prepared by the students of BHM and Culinary Arts was served to the teachers with a live chaat counter at the venue. The specials of the day were the classic Mangalorean Prawn Ghee Roast and the delectable Bengali Chicken Chaap. The highlight of the meal was the dessert as each plate carried a personalized message for each teacher as a unique way of saying ‘Thank you’.

The students ensured that the faculty members had a fun-filled afternoon and the cake was served in their respective cabins, served alongside hand-made cards made by the students as a token of gratitude which proved to be the cherry on top.

After a wonderful afternoon, the faculty and students assembled in Chaitya hall for the Student Council Installation Programme. The council was formally installed by the Principal, Mrs. Parvadhavardhini Gopalakrishnan after the oath-taking ceremony. The members of the council were awarded with medals as a token of initiation for their future endeavours as members of the council.

The president of DOCA, Ms. Amritha Ravi and the secretary of WGSHA, Ms. Seema Mirza addressed the gathering on behalf of the student council and spoke about the objectives and goals that they have set for the academic year of 2016-17.

Various students were awarded with certificates for their excellent academic performance as well as sports achievements for the previous year. The students of the 1st year from BHM and Culinary Arts were recognized for their previous achievements in regards to sports at National and State levels.

After the formal ceremony concluded, it was followed by a cultural gala put up by the students, dedicated to the teachers. The Music Club launched the show with a nostalgic repertoire of songs including the classic from Roja, ‘Choti Si Asha’ and the theme song from the popular T.V show F.R.I.E.N.D.S titled ‘I’ll be there for you’.

Next, the Dramatics Club put up a skit with an evergreen theme of the importance of teachers, their impact on a student’s life, and concluded by thanking all the faculty members for the inspiration they instill in the students every day.

Before the event came to a close, the Dance Club put up a stellar performance with the students dancing off to new numbers as well as old. The performances were received with tremendous applause from not only the student crowd, but the faculty as well.

As the sun set and the curtains were drawn, the teachers left the venue with memories to keep for years to come; and students with hearts filled with gratitude.
