Initiated at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal on 1st January 2017, the Department of Emergency Medicine has grown rapidly, with eight Emergency Physicians now covering the Emergency Department round the clock. Its faculty are active in academics and research, contribute to building Emergency Medicine nationally and to policy-making, and lead multiple facets of the specialty's academics and administration. In 2019, the department became the first Academic Emergency Medicine Department in the region to be accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals under the EMERALD module — streamlining care through updated, evidence-based protocols customised for the Indian patient population.
