     Dr Chythra R Rao teaches and trains undergraduate and post graduate medical students in Community Medicine.

    She:

    • Works in community health programs and undertakes research projects.
    • Is in charge of Alevoor Rural Maternity and Child Welfare (RMCW) Home.
    • Trains faculty members of Kasturba Medical College in Research methodology, Epidemiology and Bio-statistics
    • Guides medical undergraduate students for ICMR STS projects.
    • Organizes various workshops/CMEs in the department.
    • Conducts outreach programs, community sensitization and health education programs in the community.

OBJECTIVES: To assess recently delivered mothers with respect to, -Socio-demographic characteristics -Haemoglobin level -Factors associated with haemoglobin level RESULTS: The study included 343 recently delivered mothers among whom 91(26.5%) had anaemia, 89(25.9%) had mild anaemia, 2(0.6%) had moderate anaemia and no case of severe anaemia was detected.

Assessment of cultural beliefs and practices during the post natal period in a coastal town of South India - A mixed method research study

To assess the beliefs and practices during post natal period with respect to, a. food taboos b. personal hygiene c. rest d. confinement at home 2. To assess association between the practices and socio-demographic characteristics RESULTS: During puerperium vegetables such as brinjal were avoided by 65.5% individuals and fruits like papaya by as many as 73.6%. Among the mothers interviewed 10.9% consumed less than 500ml of water every day and 10% did not drink milk at all. More than two thirds of the women took bath daily and maintained vulval hygiene. The concept of homemade remedies was found to be popular.

A study on the quality of life of patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension presenting to a tertiary care hospital in southern India

8th semester MBBS, 2011, Cross- sectional study OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of chronic diseases (type-2 diabetes and/or Hypertension) on the quality of life. 1. To find the association between quality of life and socio-demographic variables. 2. To find the association between quality of life and therapeutic control of the chronic illness. RESULTS: Most of the patients (46.2%) belonged to the ‘average’ category of Quality of life. 1. Out of the 17 patients who were in a state of Therapeutic control, 8(47.05%) patients had Good quality of life.
