An Indian patent is granted to Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education by the Indian Patent Office for the invention titled “The Compression Coated Tablet Composition for Chronotherapy of Hypertension” (Patent number 286353). Dr Usha Y Nayak, Associate Professor, Dept. of Pharmaceutics and Dr N Udupa (seen in the image), Director Research (Health Sciences), Manipal Academy of Higher Education; Professor, Dept. of  Pharmacy Management and Dr P D Gupta, Former Scientist, CCMB, Hyderabad are the inventors.  The work was carried out by Dr Usha as a part of her doctoral thesis and the patent application was filed in 2010.

Description of the work: Cardiac failure in hypertensive patient is more likely to occur during early morning due to chronobiological variation in blood pressure. Morning surge in blood pressure is the major reason for occurrence of cardiovascular complications such as stroke, myocardial infarction, heart attack, etc.  As the conventional dosage forms of antihypertensive drugs fail to provide the required amount of the drug during early morning surge, the inventors developed a modified release, chronotherapeutically active tablet dosage form of an angiotensin receptor blocker to release the drug in a controlled manner. The tablet is intended to be taken during bedtime, releasing the maximum drug at a therapeutic level during early morning hours to control the blood pressure and subsequent cardiovascular events
