Cytocon 2013 was held at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of (JIPMER) Puducherry, Tamil Nadu from October 3rd to 6th 2013. It was an academic feast with emphasis on the recent advances in the field of cytopathology. The topic discussed at the pre-conference CME was Cytology of the male genital system. Testicular aspirates were discussed in the evaluation of male infertility.  Slide seminar session was participated by faculty from various prestigious institutes of our country with the discussion on interesting lesions of male genital system. Dr Radha R Pai and Dr Flora D Lobo presented two unusual cases: Cytology of paratesticular soft tissue tumor and Isolated testicular relapse of Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma respectively. They were also chair persons for paper presentation sessions at the conference.

The conference days were equally enriching, with topics such as liver cytology and gynaecologic cytology being discussed. A symposium on the role of audit in cytopathology was also held. Guest speakers from abroad and other prestigious institutes of the country enlightened the participants on the many aspects of cytology in diagnosis.

A workshop on Liquid Based Cytology (LBC) gave an insight on the cytomorphology of cervical pathology. The advantages of LBC over the conventional pap smear technique was discussed.
Dr Deepa Adiga presented a poster titled “Cytology of Klastskin tumor”. Dr Jessica Minal presented a paper on “Accuracy of Follicular variant of Papillary carcinoma on FNA”. Dr Pooja K S presented a paper on “Atypical Glandular cells on cervicovaginal smears”. Postgraduates of our department Dr Eliz Thomas presented a paper on “Hashimoto Thyroiditis – A Correlation of Cytomorphology with Clinical, Biochemical and Radiological Findings” & Dr Archana Devi on “Mosaic of Hurthle cell lesions of the Thyroid.”

The Paper on “Atypical Glandular cells on Cervicovaginal smears” presented by Dr Pooja K S won third place in the Free paper session.

Dr Andrew Veliath, ex HOD of Pathology department of JIPMER Institute, was at the banquet party and recollected nostalgic moments of Mangalore.
