About the Department

The department of Biochemistry was established in the year 1968, following the founding of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, in 1953. The department educates medical students at the undergraduate level. It also provides MD and MSc in Medical Biochemistry postgraduate programs. The department also conducts regular CMEs for its postgraduate students and faculty. The diagnostic lab at the Biochemistry department is managed by a group of experienced and talented faculty involved in teaching and research. The diagnostic laboratory provides services to over 4000 outpatients and inpatients per day.

This lab is NABL accredited and caters to all patients visiting our hospital, and acts as a referral laboratory for private hospitals and physicians practicing in the surrounding areas. The lab has two specialty areas: a center of excellence for inborn error of metabolism screening and analytical toxicology, both of which were established in 2012 and 2015.  Approximately two lakh thirty thousand tests are handled by the laboratory every month. The laboratory is committed to maintaining the highest quality of performance using the latest technology and equipment to provide rapid and reliable results for the patient in the shortest turnaround time.

Faculty and postgraduate students are encouraged to do research and publish scientific papers. In 2020-21, the faculty contributed 28 publications in International and National Scopus indexed journals. Many Biochemistry faculty members have written articles in various newspapers published by the local media presented in many television/radio programs aired by local channels.

The Biochemistry department and the other lab departments are interconnected to the hospital by a Laboratory Information System (LIS) for speedier and accurate reports. Samples are bar-coded and fed into the equipment, automatically performing the tests indicated by the bar code. The test results obtained are instantly interphases online to the doctor's desk after verification eliminating transcriptional errors.

Adjunct faculty

We have adjunct faculty at the national & international level from different specialty areas, including research and industry.  Regular online interactions are conducted with our adjunct faculty, helpful to our students to get insight into their field.

Services Offered

24 X 7 Diagnostic Lab

The biochemistry department has a 24 X 7 fully air-conditioned diagnostic lab with high-end auto analyzers, which generates 10,000 lab reports per day for all the outpatients and inpatients visiting our hospital. A total of 27 lab technicians are working in 3 shifts to provide these services.    In addition to routine chemistry tests, specialized tests include therapeutic drug monitoring, hormones, and a first-trimester screening panel. The Turn Around Time (TAT) for the tests is a maximum of 6 hours in working hours and non-working hours is 8 hours.  The department has facilities to do all tests required for emergency management and routine care of patients within its premises. None of the emergency tests are outsourced.

Metabolic Screening Lab

Due to a lack of investigative capabilities and financial constraints, a considerable proportion of inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) problems in children go undiagnosed in India. Lack of awareness about these IEM disorders in this region of south India has motivated us to start the IEM laboratory. The only IEM lab in this district's IEM lab, serving a population of around 50,00,000 people. Patients from Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Since its inception, it has generated more than 4000 reports. Dried blood spot (DBS) samples collected from newborn babies are screened for seven congenital disorders, including Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), Congenital Hypothyroidism, Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), Phenylketonuria (PKU), Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD), Biotidinase deficiency, and Galactosemia, under the Newborn Screening program. The other investigations carried out in the IEM lab are amino acid and vitamins quantitative estimation using HPLC analyzer. Quantitative estimations of amino acids and vitamins are done using an HPLC analyzer.

Analytical Toxicology Lab

Kasturba Medical College is an important tertiary referral hospital serving 130,000,000 people in Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. In order to support diagnosis, early intervention, and comprehensive care, the Analytical toxicology wing was started. This wing was established in collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry, Forensic Medicine, and Pharmacy Practice. This center offers a different panel of tests, including- drug abuse panel, pesticide panel; alcohol panel; narcotic panel, and heavy metal panel. Since its inception, it has generated more than 5000 reports.

Research

As biochemistry is a core basic science department offering diagnostic services and supporting postgraduate and PhD programs, it regularly conducts academic activities like CMEs and conferences. It has good research output in the form of publications.
