The Department of General Surgery is one of the key departments among clinical specialities. The department was started as a part of Kasturba Medical College in 1953. Post-graduation course in General Surgery first started in 1972. Over the years the department has evolved and has maintained pace with changing times and needs of the society.

Today, besides training undergraduates and postgraduates in General Surgery, the department is proud of performing state-of-the-art speciality clinical work including esophagogastric, pancreato-biliary, colorectal, breast, endocrine, head & neck  minimal access surgeries.
