Summer Research Internship Program 2020 (SRI2020)

On account of the on-going and unprecedented crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SRI-2020 program hosted by the Manipal Centre for Natural Sciences (MCNS) , MAHE, will not be conducted this year and stands cancelled. Duration: 6 weeks.

End Date: Friday, 17th July, 2020.

Venue: Manipal Centre for Natural Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Dr. TMA Pai Planetarium building, Madhav Nagar, Manipal 576 104, Karnataka.

Applications are invited from outstanding students for the Summer Research Internship (SRI2020) Program at the Manipal Centre for Natural Sciences (MCNS), Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka.

The Manipal Centre for Natural Sciences is dedicated to the pursuit of fundamental research in the natural sciences. The SRI Program is an annual event which runs for 6 weeks over the summer. It intends to introduce the participants to the steps involved in the scientific investigations. Opportunities for SRI2020 are available in the following research areas:

  1. Computational Chemistry
  2. High Energy Physics, Neutrino Physics
  3. Nuclear Physics
  4. Observational Astrophysics
  5. Planetary Science
  6. Cosmology & Gravitation

Selections are highly competitive and only a limited number of supported internships are available. Support for internships includes:

  • A consolidated stipend of Rs. 15,000/-       
  • Free, shared, on-campus hostel accommodation


The travel expenses from the home institutes to Manipal and back as well as the food charges need to be borne by the participant. The stipend is meant to partially support such expenses.


  • Interns work closely with active researchers and eminent faculty within a pure research environment.     
  • The course provides an excellent opportunity to the intern to become acquainted with experimental,             computational and theoretical techniques, in the natural sciences, which are required for addressing            contemporary problems at the forefront of fundamental research.     
  • The course acquaints the intern with the entire research life-cycle from the statement of the problem to writing an original research article in the format of the best journal in the field.

 Who can apply:  Students who are highly motivated to do pure research and currently enrolled in: -

  • M. Sc./ M. Tech. / Integrated M. Sc./ M. Tech. program at a reputed institution
  • B. Sc./ B. Tech.  / B.A. (mathematics or related discipline) at a reputed institution

Applications received from students who have completed their studies (undergraduate or master’s degree within the last 12 months) and are not pursuing any coursework at present are also eligible for the program but will not be provided with financial support. Such students will be considered depending on vacancies.

  • Two letters of recommendation (to be sent to the above e-mail address) from referees, who have taught you or are familiar with your academic work should accompany the application.

  •  List of candidates shortlisted for Skype interview will be uploaded to this website by  Saturday 2nd May 2020.          
  • Selection interviews will be conducted via Skype between Tuesday 5th –Thursday 7th May 2020.  
  •  List of selected candidates will be uploaded to the website by Thursday 14th May 2020.

Due to the large number of applications received, applicants will not be notified individually.
