MCODS has three main goals and objectives, which cover all the aspects for grooming a student into a mature, Knowledgeable and responsive dentist, ever willing to meet the needs of the patients and society at large.
Dr. Suprabha B.S, Professor & Head, Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry won the Best Paper award of the Scientific Session for the Scientific paper titled “Association of Candid Spp. With Oral Health Practices and Activity Status of Carious lesions among children with Early Childhood caries” at the 41st National Conference of Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry held at I.T.S Dental College, Hospital and Research Centre, Greater Noida from 7th November to 9th November 2019.
Dr. Harshita Sharma, 1st year postgraduate student of the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry won the Best Poster Presentation Award for the poster titled “ Changing Times of Cariology ” at the 41st National Conference of the Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry held at I.T.S Dental College, Hospital and Research Centre, Greater Noida from 7th November to 9th November 2019.
Dr. Kundabala Mala, Professor, Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics has been awarded, "NATIONAL ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD, IACDE, 2019 " which is an award of honour for exceptional academic work and dedication to the field of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics at the 34th IACDE National Conference 2019 held from November 29th – 1st Dec. 2019 at The CIDCO Convention and Exhibition centre, Navi Mumbai.
Dr. Arathi Rao, Professor, Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry won the Best Paper award of the Scientific Session for the paper titled “Clinical And Radiographic Evaluation of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate and Amniotic Membrane Pulpotomy in Primary Molars: A Randomized Clinical Trial” at the 47th Karnataka State & 6th Inter State Dental Conference, held at PES Engineering College, Mandya from 13th - 15th December 2019.
Certificate Course in Forensic Odontology is a blended programme conducted by Centre for Forensic Odontology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal. The blended module involves 6 months of online sessions in the form of video lectures, audio content, word documents, links, pdf documents, assignments and online tests. In continuation with the 6 month online module, a contact session was conducted from 2nd December 2019 to 6th December 2019 at the MCODS, Mangalore. Dr. Nitin Agrawal, Forensic Specialist, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Dr. Samarika Dahal presently working Assistant Professor at Maharajgunj Medical Campus, Institute of Medicine, Katmandu, Nepal and a Consultant Forensic Odontologist, INFOdont, International Network for Forensic Odontology, Kathmandu, Nepal were the resource persons for the programme. They are qualified forensic experts trained at University of Dundee and have vast experience in the field of Forensic Odontology by being constantly involved in identification in various air crashes and natural disasters in Nepal and in various other countries. The contact session involved an intensive hands-on training on Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) protocols with a mock crime scene workup. The emphasis was given to the odontological aspects in building the biological profile of skeletal remains recovered for comparative dental identification. The workshop included training on exhumation, extraction of antemortem data from interviews, postmortem dental examination, collection of evidence from the scene of disaster, comparative dental identification etc. Dr. Suresh Shetty, Professor of Forensic Medicine (State Medicolegal consultant) and his team including Dr Jagadish Rao and Dr Pavanchand Shetty, both district Medicolegal consultants where the resource persons from the Department of Forensic Medicine, Kasturba Medical College. Dr. Suresh Shetty conducted a session on the courtroom proceedings, protocols and importance of Legal issues involved in Forensics. Dr. Jagadish Rao conducted an elaborate demonstration and hands-on of Autopsy with special emphasis on oral examination and oral autopsy. Dr. Pavanchand Shetty tutored the candidates on the essentials of evidence processing and report writing. The inhouse resource persons from Centre for Forensic Odontology conducted sessions on -Age estimation using CBCT and radiographs (Dr. Ceena Denny and Dr. Nandita Shenoy) - Sex determination using hand wrist radiographs (Dr. Nidhin Philip Jose), and - Bitemark analysis using overlays (Dr. Nandita KP and Dr. Puneeth Hegde) The Valedictory programme was held on 5th December, 2019 at MCODS, Mangalore. The function began with a welcome note by Dr.Nidhi Manaktala, Associate Professor, Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Mangalore. Dr. Srikant N., coordinator of the Centre and Head of Department, Oral Pathology and Microbiology, MCODS, Mangalore presented a brief overview of the aim, activities and progress of the centre. The chief guest Dr. Dilip G Naik, Dean, MCODS, Mangalore, emphasized the importance of the forensic odontology and related fields in dentistry and the need for collaboration between different institutes in research and academia. The resource persons Dr. Nitin Agrawal (introduced by Dr. Ashwin Rao, Associate Professor, Department of Paedodontics) and Dr. Samarika Dahal (introduced by Dr. Nandita KP, Associate Professor in Department of Oral Pathology) were felicitated at the programme. The function ended by distribution of certificates to the candidates enrolled for the batch of 2019. The function ended with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Amitha J Lewis, Associate Professor, Department of Oral Pathology. The candidates gave a positive feedback about the online and offline course. A full day Continuing Professional Development Program “Tell Tale Teeth v.4.0” was conducted by the Centre for Forensic Odontology, MAHE, and Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, on 5th December, 2019 at the Lecture Hall 2, Attavar campus, MCODS, Mangalore. The chief guest for the inaugural ceremony was Dr. Dilip Naik, Dean, MCODS, Mangalore. He emphasized the importance and scope of forensic odontology and other related certificate programmes in dentistry. Dr. Nitin Agrawal, working presently as an ICRC member and Dr. Samarika Dahal working presently as Assistant Professor in Department of Dentistry, Maharajgunj Medical Campus, Institute of Medicine, Katmandu, Nepal, were the international resource persons for the programme. They are qualified forensic experts trained at University of Dundee and have vast experience in the field of Forensic Odontology by being constantly involved in identification in various air crashes and natural disasters in Nepal and in various other countries. They emphasised on the importance of identification of human remains and odontological aspects of building the biological profile of skeletal remains recovered for comparative dental identification. The CPD program further included a hands-on training program with Dr. Nitin and Dr. Samarika providing an insight to Comparative dental evaluation, Reconciliation and Dental Comparison report writing. This program was attended by about 170 participants including Faculty, Postgraduate and undergraduates from the colleges around Mangalore and students of the certificate course in forensic odontology.

This new digital acquisition is the latest highlight in the Institution’s constant commitment and endeavor to be global leaders in dental education and oral health care. The facility was inaugurated by Dr. H.S Ballal, honorable Pro Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education(MAHE), Manipal on 4th December, 2019 at the Medical Education Department,Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. Dr. Surendra Shetty, Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. Poornima Baliga, Pro Vice Chancellor ( Faculty of Health Sciences), Dr. Dilip G Naik, Dean, MCODS(Mangalore) Associate Deans of MCODS(Mangalore) Dr. Ashita Uppoor and Dr. Premlatha Shetty, Dr. M.V. Prabhu,Dean,KMC(Mangalore) , Dr. Alfred Augustine, Additional Dean,KMC (Mangalore) and Associate Deans,KMC(Mangalore) - Dr. Bhaskaran Unnikrishnan and Dr. Nuthan Kamath also graced the occasion. The inaugural ceremony commenced with a prayer to the Almighty followed by a very warm welcome by the dynamic Dean, Dr. Dilip G. Naik. Dr. Poornima Baliga, Pro Vice Chancellor ((Faculty of health sciences),MAHE then formally launched the two new social media handles of MCODS, Mangalore –Twitter and Instagram. The college E-newsletter “Communique” showcases the achievements of students and faculty as well as CDE programs conducted by the institution.It is prepared and published by each department in turn, every quarter and is circulated to the parents,alumni and several prestigious dental colleges across the country and the globe. Dr. V Surendra Shetty,Pro VC,Mangalore campus did the honour of formally releasing the latest issue of the same. Dr. Shobha Rodrigues,Professor and Head,Department of Prosthodontics then briefed us about the details of the Inlab CAD/CAM system and its several advantages from the patient’s as well as the doctor’s perspective. Our ever inspiring, honorable Pro Chancellor Dr. H.S. Ballal was the Chief Guest of the ceremony and he enthralled the audience with his ready wit and words of encouragement. The ceremony concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Karthik Shetty, Professor and Head, Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics.
The Institutional Academic Reputation organised a faculty development program on Problem Based Learning. The resource person was Dr Prasanna Neelakantan from Hong Kong Dental School. He spoke on the basics of PBL, the best practices of implementing PBL at hong kong dental school , and also the possibilities and difficulties of implementing a PBL in the Indian Dental Curriculum. The program was attended by faculty representatives from all departments. This was followed by an engaging interactive session by Dr Prassana and Dr Supriya (Professor, Dept of Orthodontics, MCODS, Mangalore) in which a problem was discussed with the participants.
