Dr. Somashekara Bhat completed his BTech in Electronics & Communication Engineering (1990) from NMAMIT Nitte; MTech in Industrial Electronics (1993) from NITK Suratkal (formerly known as  KREC Surathkal); and Ph.D. (2008) from IIT Madras. Dr.  Somashekara Bhat joined Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal in 1995 as Lecturer and since then he is serving the institute in various academic and administrative capacities.

Dr. Bhat   has guided research scholars and numerous UG/PG students in their project work. Six scholars have received Ph.D. under his guideship and presently he is guiding three more scholars. With the financial aid from National Programme on Micro and Smart Materials and Systems, he was instrumental in setting up National MEMS Design Center in the ECE department. He has more than 25 Journal publications and 40 plus conference publications. 3 Indian patents are filed with him as a coinventor. He is serving as a reviewer for the Journal of Micro/Nanolithography, MEMS, and MOEMS. He has delivered Keynote Addresses, Invited Talks, and Guest Lectures at various National and International Conferences. He has acted as a resource person in many workshops and FDPs conducted within and outside MAHE.  

 

Prior to present assignment as Joint Director, MIT Manipal, he has served as In-charge, MIT HAM Club; In-charge, Continuing Education and Student Counselling, MIT Manipal; PG Programme Coordinator, Department of ECE, MIT Manipal; Block Warden, MIT Hostels; Head, Department of ECE, MIT Manipal; IP Chair at MAHE, Member of Ph.D. Proposal Approval Committee, MAHE; Committee member for NEP-2020 implementation at MAHE, and Associate Director (Development), MIT Manipal.  

 

Dr. Bhat is a Life Member of professional bodies such as the Indian Society for Technical Education, Institution of Engineers, and Institute for Smart Structures and Systems. As an Amateur Radio Operator Dr. Bhat (VU2NJN), is a Life Member of Amateur Radio Society of India (ARSI) and Mangalore Amateur Radio Club (MARC). Along with many volunteers all over the nation, he has served the society during the Gujarath Earthquake in 2001, to set up radio communication between various relief centres. He and his friends in the MARC regularly support the NDRF team in their mock drills in disaster management. As a part of this hobby, he and his friends initiated the early proposal to set up a Community FM Radio Station in Manipal.
