Workshop on Essentials of Mooting in association with Lawctopus | 14-15th September 2023

MLS, Bengaluru, in association with Lawctopus, organized a two-day workshop, from 14 September to 15 September 2023 on ‘Essentials of Mooting’ to inculcate in students a legal acumen to excel in the field of advocacy.

Bearing in mind the importance of moot court, the event was organized to cater to all students irrespective of their exposure or experience in the given field.

Mr. Jaibatruka Mohanta and Ms. Akanksha Mishra from Lawctopus gave elaborate lectures spanning over two days. The workshop started with a small inauguration ceremony followed by lectures which were divided into four modules. The lecture started with an introduction to mooting where the students were made familiar with the importance of participating in moot court competitions and how to go about selecting their team and deciding which moot court competition to participate in. The students were trained to read moot problems and to research for the memorials, what methodology to follow and how to understand key concepts pertaining to jurisdiction and applicable laws.

Additionally, the students were trained to use online databases like Manupatra and SCC Online.

A special emphasis was placed on how to draft and format a memorial, which included various topics like how to prepare the cover page, table of contents, a list of abbreviations, index of authorities, statement of jurisdiction, issues, arguments etc.

The students were told about the court room etiquette, like, how to address the court, how to cite case laws, how to prepare arguments, courtroom actions etc.

The event ended with the playing of a recorded moot court proceedings wherein the students got to observe leading mooters moot and respond to the questions raised by judges.

Also, free online access to the course has been given to all faculty members and students alike to facilitate their learning of the topic.
