Start Date: March 02, 2023

End Date: March 03, 2023

A two-day workshop on neurofeedback and music therapy was organized by Manipal Academy of Higher Education on the 2nd and 3rd March of 2023. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Sai Kiran Kumar, a professor of Allied Health Sciences at Frontier Lifeline Hospitals. It started with an inaugural function on the 2nd March at 9.30 am, which was graced by the honourable HoD Dr. Shilpa Kalyan. After the inaugural function, technical sessions were conducted for over 10 hours over the next two days.

The workshop was conducted for 2 days with concurrent theoretical sessions, discussions, demos and practice sessions on Neurofeedback and Music Therapy. The session followed by sharing of learnings and our review of the workshop. The outcome of the workshop was that the students learnt to effectively understand, practice and deliver neurofeedback techniques, EEG being one of them.

Day 1 – Introduction to Neurofeedback Therapy

The first day of the technical sessions comprising of 3 sessions, started with the ice breaking conversation on our prior understanding of neurofeedback therapy, which was then followed by a detailed presentation on the same, where its meaning and significance were explained. Key concepts such as the EEG, various frequency components and EEG electrolyte placements were discussed in detail. The last session of the day involved the resource person conducting an EEG and elaborating on how it can be further interpreted.

Day 2- Introduction to Music Therapy

Being a relatively more interactive session than the previous day, day 2 introduced the relationship between music and the human mind. Now with a deeper understanding of the concepts, students were able to conduct and interpret the EEG on each other too. The effects of music (of different genres) on different parts of the brain were also noted as the resource person played multiple tunes on a guitar while the EEG was being conducted on a participant. This session ended with the entire class collectively writing the lyrics to their own song as a means to express themselves while simultaneously improving mood and releasing stress.

Overall, it was a well-thought-out workshop as accessing real time data of knowing how we think the way we think was truly intriguing to all the students.
