Overview

The Department of Forensic Medicine is currently providing training in subject specialty of Forensic Medicine for the undergraduate students of III, IV and V semesters of II MBBS degree classes. The department has modern amenities with well-planned and furnished faculty rooms and office, equipped with computers, laptops for all the faculty and Wi-Fi internet facility, non-teaching staff rooms, departmental research room, an outstandingly organised museum, full time operational staff library and a huge student laboratory, a spacious demo room and seminar room with OHP, LCD projectors and audio-visual systems which can comfortably seat about 250 students.

The department provides a good service to society by performing around a clock medico legal autopsy services, in a well-equipped and maintained separate mortuary block, complete with modern equipment and instruments at the Government District Head Quarters Wenlock Hospital, Mangalore. Autopsy workload undertaken by the faculty and technical staff members of the department range from nearly 900 cases annually.

The department also functions as the office of the State Medico Legal Consultant, with Professor and Head of the Department, assigned as the Hon. State Medico Legal Expert to the Govt. of Karnataka under taking medico legal cases for the expert opinion, referred from the Dakshin Kannada, Udupi, Coorg and Chikmagalur districts of Karnataka and Kerala states.

The department conducts nearly 900 post mortem examinations per year in mortuary of Dist. Hospital and provide around the clock service free of cost to the patient party.

About the Area of Study

Forensic Medicine is medical speciality which deal with the application of medical knowledge in administration of justice. A Forensic expert deal with crime scene investigation, post mortem work and medicolegal cases like examination of rape victim and rape accused, examination for issue of drunkenness and injury certificates, examination of person and evidence for age estimation etc. In course of work a forensic expert is also involved in expert opinions and court evidences.
