Manipal Institute of Virology (MIV) is led by the Director and a dedicated team of faculty members who guide the institute’s operations under the academic, research, and diagnostic wings of the institute. In addition to academicians and researchers who are virologists, microbiologists, pharmacologists, clinicians, epidemiologists, entomologists, biotechnologists, and laboratory technologists, the institute has attracted students from all over India and abroad who come to pursue master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral studies in MIV. The vision and mission of the institute is global excellence and leadership in the field of clinical virology research and public health practice.

Prof. Dr Chiranjay Mukhopadhyay is a clinical microbiologist, physician scientist, and infectious diseases specialist researching tropical bacterial infections with a special interest in Melioidosis and global infection including antimicrobial resistance and diagnostic stewardship. Dr Mukhopadhyay obtained his MBBS from Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (Calcutta University, 1993) and MD from Institute of Medical Sciences (Benaras Hindu University, 2000). He completed post doctorate in infectious diseases from Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (Lucknow, 2003) and PhD from Manipal University (Manipal, 2015). He has been selected for the Prestigious ‘Leadership in Academician Program’ (LEAP) by IISER, Kolkata and ‘Leadership for Improving Higher Education in India (LIHEI)’, by Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard University, Cambridge, USA, under MHRD, Govt. of India (Feb- March, 2019). Professional awards and achievements include best research publication award on ‘Melioidosis’ by VGST (2009 – 10), DST, Govt. of Karnataka, India; Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award for ‘Basic Research in Medical Science’ in Melioidosis by Medical Council of India. He has been serving as the Associate Dean for Kasturba Medical College since 2018; Chief of the Department of Infection Control and Management, Kasturba Hospital since 2015. Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, since 2012.
