Medical Entomology
Vector-borne diseases contribute to the majority of infectious diseases. Dengue, malaria, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, kala-azar and filariasis cause significant disease and socio-economic burdens, particularly in the rural area. Surveillance of these vector-borne diseases plays an important role in the control and prevention of the diseases. Identification of the vectors and vector control enables to disrupt of the transmission cycle thereby controlling the spread in the community.
Learning Objectives:
- To understand the transmission cycle of important VBDs of India and its host adaptations
- To familiarize the morphological identification classification techniques of arthropods
- To understand the molecular and immunological tools for VBD detection in vectors
Learning Outcome:
Upon completion of the course the participants should be able to:
- Understand the basic biology and ecology of the arthropods of public health importance.
- Comprehend the surveillance tools and control strategies of important public health vectors
- Understand the influence of climate and environment on vector ecology
- Enhance the skills in vector-borne disease (VBD) surveillance, insect species identification (Taxonomy) and vector control
