Overview

TCQM is a joint initiative between Manipal Academy of Higher Education and the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. TCQM is carrying out its various activities with the support of seed fund by Dr. TMA Pai Endowment Chair in Qualitative Research. The Centre provides a broad base of support to any young researcher who seeks to delve into the world of qualitative research with unlimited resources, good infrastructure and the required expertise on qualitative research methods.

The main objectives of the TCQM are:

  • To promote inter-disciplinary research in public health
  •  To provide impetus to researchers from across disciplines to share expertise and collaborate
  • To create awareness about qualitative research in public health in South Asia
  • To build capacities of young scholars in teaching and conducting qualitative research
  • To establish a regional hub in qualitative research in South Asia through a trans- disciplinary approach

Academic Programmes

Certificate Course in Qualitative Research Methods

TCQM, Prasanna School of Public Health, MAHE, conducts an annual ‘Certificate Course in Qualitative Research Methods’ in association with Utrecht University, every year. The course structure for the program includes both classroom teachings and assignments. The certificate course sessions include various steps involved in qualitative research methods such as research design, participant recruitment, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, observations, data management, analysis and presentation. During the course period, individual assignments are undertaken by participants with the aim to develop strong skills in qualitative research methods. . In addition to the lectures TCQM will also organize methods seminars provided by our extensive network of international speakers.

The course starts on 1st September 2022 to 30th November 2022 through hybrid mode.  Interested candidates submit your resume and motivational letter to tcqm.mu@manipal.edu on or before 25th August, 2022.

Transdisciplinary Centre for Qualitative Methods (TCQM), Department of Health Information, Prasanna School of Public Health, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal had organized an EQUIMOB (Inclusive-Cities through Equitable access to Urban Mobility) and ISEC (Institute for Social and Economic Change) Golden Jubilee International Seminar on ‘Cities on the Move – Inclusive Transport and Mobility for South Asian Cities’ on the Premises of Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bengaluru, India on October 13 and 14, 2022.

The resource persons discussed several dimensions of inclusive urban mobility and transport accessibility. They focused on gendered access to urban transport, wherein they discussed women’s safety, mobility, and access to cities; transportation barriers that lead to delayed medical care; affordability; intersections of urban transport and inequalities of access. In addition, there was a round table discussion on “Art for Decolonising Mobility Research” and resource persons emphasised the (re)thinking and (re)orienting of mobility research and research medhodologies.

There were Paper Presentations on everyday aggressions of public transport; transport mobility issues and adaptive behaviour of women in a developing country; transport as cultural embedding; the role of pilgrimage-leisure trips in reproducing culture; how traffic congestion drives commuters to prefer private vehicles; and barriers and enablers to urban transport.

Transdisciplinary Centre for Qualitative Methods, Department of Health Information, Prasanna School of Public Health, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal organized a Certificate Course in Qualitative Research Methods from September to December.

The certificate course covered the sessions on: Introduction to Qualitative research and Qualitative Research Design; Participant Recruitment; Data collection techniques such as In-depth Interviewing, Focus Group Discussion, and Visual Methods; Qualitative Data Analysis with the Software Atlas ti.; and Presenting and Writing Qualitative Research.
