Overview

Course Description:

Medical Radiochemistry is a specialized branch of nuclear medicine science which encompasses the concepts of chemistry, physics, biology and pharmacy that deals with incorporation of a suitable radionuclide into a pharmaceutical or other biologically active molecule such that it can then be used for diagnostic imaging or therapy. The M.Sc. (Medical Radiochemistry) with integrated Ph.D. program is under Manipal College of Health Professions (MCHP) and is a 5 year (2 years master’s degree + 3-years PhD) full time course. On successful completion of four semesters, the student can opt to exit with an MSc degree in Medical Radiochemistry or can opt to continue for PhD. Entry to the PhD program is subject to the fulfilment of minimum mandatory requirements by the student in first two semesters of M.Sc. as per the standard guidelines for Integrated PhD programs by Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Such a student will be better equipped than a regular M.Sc. student, while beginning to do Ph.D. level work.

Focus:

The focus of M.Sc. (Medical Radiochemistry) with integrated Ph.D. program is to generate expertise and manpower who can be at par with global standards of research and education in biomedical application of radioisotopes. These individuals will be well-equipped to take up R&D projects that lead to the development of new radiotracers for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in nuclear medicine.

Career Prospects:

The candidates after successful completion of M.Sc. degree in Medical Radiochemistry can pursue their career in service sector as:

  • Radiochemist in Medical cyclotron units.
  • Radiopharmacist or Radiochemist in Nuclear Medicine setup.

The candidates with MSc (Medical Radiochemistry) and PhD degree can pursue their career in:

  • R&D as Scientist/Research associate in medical radiochemistry/radiopharmacy.
  • Teaching sector as Assistant professor of radiochemistry in Nuclear Medicine department.
