University of Strathclyde

The University of Strathclyde began in 1796 when John Anderson, Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University, left instructions in his will for ‘a place of useful learning’- a university open to everyone. His vision was realized when Anderson’s University opened later the same year.

Over the first half of the 20th century, the college developed its reputation for technical education and research. It was known for producing some of the best scientists and engineers of its time.

At the time of it Royal Charter in 1964, the University had around 4000 full-time students and one block of buildings fronted by the Royal College. Today, Strathclyde is the third largest university in Scotland.

Strathclyde’s mission as a leading international technological university is reflected in the make-up of its staff and student population, with international staff in each faculty and more than 100 nations represented among the University’s students accounting for 10% of the total.

  • The University’s score of 809 points out of a possible 1000 puts it in the top bracket of the QS Stars rankings
  • The success is the latest endorsement of Strathclyde’s education, research, public engagement and student experience, following the 2012 Times Higher Education UK University of the Year award.
  • Figures published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency in 2013 showed that 93.2% of Strathclyde’s 2011-12 graduates were in work or further study six months after their graduation.
  • The PraxisUnico Spinouts UK Survey, published in August 2013, found that Strathclyde was the fifth most successful UK University for the creation of spinout and start-up companies, with 97 established since 2000.

The Engineering streams offered by the university are:
