Keen competitions witnessed at ‘Chemie-Vivanta – React to Life’

Department of Biochemistry conducted “Chemie-Vivanta-React to Life” an intercollegiate competition for Post graduates and Doctoral students in Biochemistry on September 21, 2013 at Centre for Basic Sciences, KMC, Mangalore.

The topics for “Le Nouvelle” - Innovation talk, were: 1) Biochemistry making history; 2) Recent advances in biochemistry; 3) Newer analytical techniques; 4) Advances in medical education. The esteemed judges for this contest were; Dr H P  Kedilaya, Prof and HOD of Biochemistry, Yenepoya Medical College, Dr  Animesh Jain, Associate Professor, Dept of Community Medicine, KMC, Mangalore and  Dr Smitha Hegde, Professor and HOD of Biotechnology, St. Aloysius College. The contest comprising highly informative talks from the postgraduate students along with the judges’ valuable inputs culminated in a great learning experience for the students as well as faculty.

“The Manifesto”-Poster competition for doctoral and postgraduate students, was judged by Dr Pragna Rao, Professor and HOD of Biochemistry, KMC, Manipal and Dr Malathi , Professor and HOD of Biochemistry, Father Muller Medical College,Mangalore.

“Agonist Antagonist”-Debate was aimed at discussing controversial topics in the field of biochemistry, 1. Use of artificial sweeteners- ‘A Sweet Sword’!! 2. Fortification with antioxidants - ‘Healthy Hazard’!! 3. Integrated teaching - ‘Pros & Cons’!! The judges from KMC Mangalore, Dr GG Laxman Prabhu, Professor and HOD of Urology, Dr Shivananda Prabhu, Professor of Surgery, and Dr Deepak Madi, Associate Professor of Medicine, took part with great fervor and shared their thoughts with the audience.

The chief guest, Dr Vivian D’souza, Associate Dean and Professor of Biochemistry, KMC, Mangalore inaugurated the programme and briefed the history of the annual PG Lecture contest held in KMC, Manipal and KMC, Mangalore alternately. Dr Poornima Manjrekar, Professor and HOD of Biochemistry also addressed the gathering and emphasized the need for such competitions among postgraduates for updating knowledge in addition to their improvement in communication. The organizing secretaries for the event were Dr Gayathri M Rao and Dr Rukmini MS.

The masters of ceremony Dr Madan Rajan, Ms Abhineetha, Dr. Sohil Takodara and Ms Jalajakshi steered the programme impressively. The postgraduates compiled video presentation of “Chemie -Vivanta -React to Life” and organized a short quiz and the event as a whole was well-organised under the leadership of Dr. Alap Christy, Final year MD student.
