Introduction:

Gastrointestinal & Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary surgery is a sub-speciality dealing with the management of diseases related to the human gastrointestinal tract which can be subdivided into luminal i.e - upper gastrointestinal tract (Esophagus, stomach) and lower gastrointestinal tract (small intestine, large intestine, rectum & anal canal) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) system involving liver, gall bladder, pancreas, duodenum, biliary tract and spleen.

Diseases of the GI & HPB system are among the most common disorders in India and majority of them involve a complex problem-solving approach. The disease management require a higher level of cognitive and psychomotor skills.

In view of recognizing the increasing need and demanding higher skills GI & HPB surgery, this Fellowship in GI & HPB surgery programme will fulfil the 3 objectives of patient care, surgical skill training and research.

Programme goal

The goal of the training Fellowship program in GI & HPB surgery is to empower a surgeon to provide tertiary care for patients with complicated problems related to the Gastrointestinal & Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary system.

At the end of the training, the trainee should be:

  • Be able to diagnose, investigate, manage and follow up patients with both benign and malignant diseases of GI & HPB system with confidence utilizing current and modern treatment strategy.
  • Be able to interpret data from relevant clinical/laboratory investigations.
  • Be able to describe & discuss the indication of common GI & HPB surgical procedures., acquainted with the knowledge of preoperative work up, optimization and have the skills to perform these operations.
  • Be aware of various therapeutic modalities like minimal access surgery, endoscopic in dealing with GI and HPB disorders.
  • Be able to discuss the updated literature on the investigative, clinical, and surgical management of GI &HPB diseases.
  • Be aware of all sub-specialties of GI & HPB surgery including transplantation.
  • Be acquainted with allied and general clinical disciplines.
  • Be capable of imparting basic GI & HPB surgical training.
  • Be able to identify, plan, conduct and communicate research in Luminal GI & HPB diseases

Eligibility:

  • Any medical graduate with MS/DNB in General Surgery qualification.
  • Admission to this course is only through Entrance Examination conducted by MAHE as per prescribed guidelines.

Every candidate admitted to the training programme shall pursue a regular course of study (on whole time basis) in the concerned recognized institution under the guidance of recognized post graduate teacher for assigned period of the course.
