About the course: Ionizing radiation sources are widely employed in many aspects of human endeavors such as medicine, industry, agriculture, research and host of other fields. To harness them for the betterment of human life without or with minimal adverse effects on health. Awareness of radiation is essential for protection from the ill effects. Participants of this short course learn basic concepts of modern physics, practical ways of production of radiation sources besides procedures for safe handling of radioactive materials at their work places keeping in mind ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle. This is a radiation safety principle for minimizing doses and release of radioactive materials to the environment.
Topics to be covered: Structure of atom, Atomic Stability, Radioactivity, Types of Radioactive decay, Characteristics of radiation sources, Commonly used radiation Sources and units of radiation, Interaction of radiation with matter, Energy deposition mechanism and Principles of radiation detection and commonly used detectors, Animal cell structure, types of radiation damages, Biological effects of radiation, Dose units, Types of radiation exposures and control measures and safe storage and disposal.
