B. Tech Curriculum Conclave: CIVIL ENGINEERING

B.Tech Curriculum Conclave of Civil Engineering was held in an online mode at MIT Manipal, as per the following schedule.

Date: 29th October 2021 (Friday)

Time:  9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

    The program was inaugurated by Dr. Narayana Sabhahit, Registrar, MAHE Manipal. He mentioned that MAHE has collaboration with top universities and advised to investigate the curriculum of other universities while going for curriculum revision. He opined that the students should be encouraged to take up entrepreneurship and Startups. He emphasized on the need for being good at basics, which every Civil Engineers should be conversant with. He also advised to improve connect with the Industry, use case studies, online learning platforms, introduction of multi-disciplinary open electives and introduce research component to augment student learning. He also highlighted that if a civil engineer with half knowledge enter into practice, it will be highly dangerous and consequences would be very expensive. 

    Mr. Arun Prabha K. S., General Manager (Technical), Mangaluru Smart City delivered a talk on “Graduate Engineer- Industry Expectations”.  He stated that the students should be able to handle the real-world scenario after graduating. He also opined that Telecom Industry as well as Health care industry requires the service of civil engineers in large numbers. He also advised that one should have the knowledge of arbitrations and ready to accept challenges to succeed.  

    Mr. Jayarama H, TASK Force leader - Chennai Metro Projects, Phase - 2, delivered a talk on “Graduate Engineer- Industry Expectations”.  He suggested that the key skills required are collaboration, right attitude for teamwork, ability to learn and complement each other and Creativity. EHES management and environment and risk management are of utmost importance according to him. He also stated that World is moving on to digitalization and being Tech Savvy is extremely important.

    “Civil Engineering – Thoughts on Curriculum” was presented by Dr. Manu Santhanam, Professor & Head - Dept of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras. He emphasized to give students the basic platform and allow the students to explore. He also opined that the core engineering content to be brought down to 40% and give choice to students. He recommended to move from teaching to facilitation and introduce capstone projects.

    This was followed by presentations, from Alumni of the Civil Engineering Department. Mr. Nishant Roy, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, BITS Pilani and Ms. Kinshuk Sharma, Jr. MD, Sanitech Engineers & Consultants Pvt Ltd., Hyderabad presented their views on “Dream Curriculum”.

    Student and Faculty representatives from Civil Engineering presented their views on the curriculum related to their programs. Mr. Hrishikesh S Sharma, Mr. Siddesh K and Ms. Upasana Surya K spoke from student side. Mr. Vishnu Unnikrishnan spoke from faculty side on the dream curriculum.

    Ms. Riya Maria, Mr. Sanskar Agarwal and Mr. Harshdeep Singh presented poster on their Dream Curriculum followed by poster presentations from faculty. Mr. Laxman Kudva presented posters from faculty side.

    The event also had a Group Discussion among the students and faculty participants on the relevant topics. Four Student groups and two faculty groups participated in the group discussion. The group leaders highlighted the outcome of group discussion.  

    Associate Director (Academics), Dr. Raviraja Adhikari presented the initial model or the draft copy of B.Tech Curriculum 2022., highlighting the salient features of the model.

Ms. Chaithra M, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering rendered the invocation.

Dr. Shankaranarayana Bhat, Associate Director (FD&W), delivered the welcome address in the beginning and presented the overview of the event.

The Vote of Thanks was proposed by the Associate Director(R&C) Dr. Ashok Rao.

The Master of Ceremonies for the event were, Ms. Sugandhini H K Assistant Professor Senior Scale and Mr. Anup Wilfred Sebastian, Assistant Professor Senior Scale from Department of Civil Engineering..

This event was organized by Office of the Faculty Development and Welfare, under the leadership of Associate Director (FD&W), Dr. Shankaranarayana Bhat.

About 90 faculty members and students from various Departments of MIT attended the online event.
