Team 3D spreading awareness on reproductive health

Creativity and innovation are hallmarks of Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Students and faculty, have it in them to think out of the box always and come up with something new that is beneficial for all. “Team 3D”, for instance, is a dream of a dreamer, Dr Deeksha Pandey of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

Being a busy clinician, did not prevent her from understanding the pains of people around her and empathizing with the issues that concern the reproductive health of both her patients and society in general. Dr Deeksha looked beyond her usual responsibilities and ventured into an area where she could put her passion and enthusiasm to create awareness and discuss reproductive health issues.

Almost two years, twenty workshops, two novels, hundred volunteers and many dreams later, today, Team 3D is a nationally registered not-for-profit organisation. Conceived in September 2015 with the release of her first Novel, “3D: Dreams, Desires, Destiny”, Team-3D started as a small group of like-minded individuals who joined hands to spread awareness and discuss reproductive health issues that people are shy or scared to talk about.

Under the leader ship of its seven Inspirational Leaders: Prof Raveendranath Nayak (Direcor SOM, Manipal Academy of Higher Education), Prof Nandini Lakshmikantha (Director SOM Manipal Academy of Higher Education), Dr Suma Nair (Director Student Affairs, Manipal Academy of Higher Education), Prof Rishi Sethi (cardiologist, KGMU, Lucknow), Dr Ranjitha Shetty, Ms Pratibha Bisht and Dr Deeksha Pandey ; Presently ‘Team 3D’ comprises 120 volunteers drawn from medicine, management, mass communication and other specialties. They conduct interactive workshops for youth for creating awareness about safe sexual practices and matters related to awareness around reproductive health. Targeting three different age groups-– Adolescents (Dreams), youngsters (Desires) and middle aged and older (Destiny)- separate programmes were created to suit the specific needs of each section of the society.

The efforts received a very encouraging recognition when the idea was chosen as one of the 80 social service projects that were to be undertaken as a part of the 80th birthday of Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Dr Ramdas Pai. Thus in the beginning of their journey the team worked under the banner of Research Directorate, Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Rotary Club Manipal.

Seventeen workshops were conducted within the university and soon requests came to conduct workshops from across different campuses, various age groups, as well as different cities. SSS-foundation, Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu invited the team to conduct two workshops. The first was an awareness workshop for the 30+ and the second, an educational-cum-training workshop for the SSS volunteers at grass root level. The team also came up with a user-friendly workbook with basic information and scoring systems for eight diseases which can either be prevented or diagnosed at early stages with better awareness.

The workbook was released at the Tuticorin workshop by founders of the SSS foundation – Ms Manju Singhwi and Dr Rajendra Bhandari. Team 3D got a further boost when Asia Oceania Research Organization on Genital Infections and Neoplasia (AOGIN) newsletter of November 2016 gave a full-page coverage on the Team and its work.

Considering the need of the hour, recently Team-3D joined hands with Student Affairs, Manipal Academy of Higher Education during their introductory event “Parichay”, where Vice-Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education Dr H. Vinod Bhat launched the website – www.team3d.org. That’s the window to Team 3D’s world.

The Dream of the Dreamer is finally taking a shape and the contagious nature of hope has now and social goodness has result in a very integrated ‘Team 3D’. The vision is to deliver health care related information to the public in the most judicious, scientific, evidence-based and balanced way by identifying and grooming people to take the idea forward.

“The message is simple but the need is urgent and people are our focus. Team-3D aspires to teach you how to take care of yourself, chase your dreams, hold on to your desires and choose your own destiny.”- so believes Dr Deeksha –‘The dreamer.’
