Birthday celebrations for The Architect of Modern Manipal
19 September, 2013
On 17 September 2013, Manipal Academy of Higher Education celebrated the birthday of Chancellor, Dr Ramdas M Pai at a simple yet impressive function at Fortune Inn Valley View at Manipal.
To mark the occasion, “Team Manipal” gifted the Chancellor his biography, in English and in Kannada. These were released by the former Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Justice M N Venkatachaliah, and are entitled, The Architect of Modern Manipal and the Kannada version, Spoorthajeevana.
In a fitting tribute, the biography narrates his life-story in a series of anecdotes as they unfolded, along with rich photographs from his childhood to the present. His own views on the growth of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and the group as a whole, also make for an arresting read.
About 50 persons have contributed to the book, including Vishwesha Teertha Swami, Vidyadhiraja Teertha Swami, Dr Veerendra Heggade, Dr Pai’s family members, senior officials of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, former teachers, former colleagues and others who have known him for several decades.
Adding to the ambience was the screening of a 10-minute video on the life and times of Dr Pai, ‘The Man With A Mission’.
In his welcome address, the Pro Chancellor Dr H S Ballal briefly spoke about Dr Pai as he has known him, and what he meant to people in the Manipal family.
Veteran Journalist and honorary director of the School of Communications, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, M V Kamath recounted anecdotes to portray Dr Pai’s personality. While Dr TMA Pai was the visionary on the barren Manipal hilltop, Mr Kamath recalled, Dr Ramdas has scripted the success of the Manipal as we see it today.
Justice Venkatachaliah said that the Pai family is an example of what people can do for their society and country and that Manipal Academy of Higher Education is a shining example of the change that educational institutions can bring in the country.
Dr Ramdas Pai graciously reiterated, “All what Manipal is today goes to the credit of the employees.” He thanked the team for all their collective successes.
It was a memorable evening that ended on a warm and happy note as the Registrar, Dr G K Prabhu gave the vote of thanks.
