School of Life Sciences Annual Day 2018
The Annual Day of the School of Life Sciences (SLS), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal held at the Fortune Inn Valley View on April 27, 2018. For its 11th Annual Day, the institution continued its theme of inviting experts from academia and industry. The chief guests were Dr. Taslimarif Saiyed (CEO and Director, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms, Bengaluru) and Mr. Sathyadeep Viswanathan (Lead Scientist, Bigtec Labs, Bengaluru), in the presence of Dr. Vinod Bhat (Vice-Chancellor, MAHE, Manipal), Dr. K Satyamoorthy (Director, SLS) and Ms. Ramya Gupta (President, Students Council of SLS).

Opportunities in Life Sciences at their peak, says C-CAMP Director
Talks about the promising potential of life sciences, the requirement for translation of research and entrepreneurship opportunities for youngsters were the main themes of the Annual Day of the School of Life Sciences (SLS), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal held at the Fortune Inn Valley View on April 27, 2018.
In his presiding address, Dr. Bhat congratulated the performance of SLS in the previous year and encouraged life science students to pursue higher education and research, as this area of science in unique and holds promise. He also spoke of the higher ambitions of the university to be among the eminent educational institution in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Saiyed said that the opportunities in life sciences are at their peak and that multidisciplinary approaches are in demand. Dwelling on the gap between academic research and industrial application, he stressed the importance of translational research through start-ups and bioincubators. He gave several examples of such bio-entrepreneurship in India through the C-CAMP network. In his address, Dr. Viswanathan described the various products that are developed from basics by his company in the area of biomedicine and security.
Earlier, Dr. Padmalatha Rai (Associate Director-Academics, SLS) welcomed the gathering. Dr. Satyamoorthy mapped the key performance indicators of the School, while Ms. Ramya Gupta described the academic and social outreach activities of the Students’ Council. Annual awards and prizes were distributed. Dr. Guruprasad (Head, Department of Ageing Research, SLS) proposed the vote of thanks. This was followed by an eclectic mix of cultural programs by students, faculty and staff of SLS.
