Oral diadokokinetic rate- An insight into speech motor control

ABSTRACT: Speech motor disruptions are common with aging. The rate of oral diadochokinesis (DDK) is considered for determining the severity of speech motor control impairments. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in motor control in geriatrics in comparison with younger adults with Diadokokinesis as a speech parameter. Significant difference was observed between the geriatrics compared to the younger groups indicating poor performance of geriatrics on diadochokinetic rate in comparison to normal adults. The present investigation has provided evidence for analysing the error patterns in the syllable repetitions using DDK rate which is a simple yet quantitative measure. ABSTRACT: Background: The prevalence of communication disorders has not received required attention in the literature especially in India. Objective: To determine the prevalence of communication disorders in a multidisciplinary teaching hospital, among speech and language and hearing disorders. Setting and Study Design: A retrospective study conducted at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. Materials and Methods: The data was retrieved from the records documented in the Hospital records over one year duration. The disorders were broadly categorized in terms of speech, language and hearing disorders across pediatric (0- 12 years), adult (12-50 years) and geriatric (Above 50 years) age groups. Results: The prevalence was more for auditory disorders (62%) followed by language disorders (24%) and then speech disorders (14%). The disorders were more prevalent in males as compared to females for the disorders under study across all the age groups. Conclusion: Prevalence estimation is essential in the prevention or intervention strategies particularly so for the communication disorders which often go unnoticed yet have major impact on every facet of life. Key Messages: There is a need for large-scale population based prevalence studies on communication disorders in India. They often go unnoticed or does not get prioritized owing to lack of identifiable signs.This study will carry implications for current and future needs in early identification, prevention and intervention programs for these disorders. Peak Flow Measure: An Index of Respiratory Function?

ABSTRACT: Aerodynamic analysis is interpreted as a reflection of the valving activity of the larynx. It involves measuring changes in air volume, flow and pressure which indicate respiratory function. These measures help in determining the important aspects of lung function. Peak expiratory flow rate is a widely used respiratory measure and is an effective measure of effort dependent airflow. Aim: The aim of the current study was to study the peak flow as an aerodynamic measure in healthy normal individuals Method: The study group was divided into two groups with n= 60(30 males and 30 females) in the age range of 18-22 years. The peak flow was measured using Aerophone II (Voice Function Analyser). The anthropometric measurements such as height, weight and Body Mass Index was calculated for all the participants. Results: The peak airflow was higher in females as compared to that of males. It was also observed that the peak air flow rate was correlating well with height and weight in males. Conclusions: Speech language pathologist should consider peak expiratory airflow, a short sharp exhalation rate as a part of routine aerodynamic evaluation which is easier as compared to the otherwise commonly used measure, the vital capacity. Self-efficacy and Verbal Fluency--Does Age Play a Role?

ABSTRACT: Self-efficacy refers to the beliefs that one possesses about his/her ability to achieve specific targets in a certain context. It is one of the important aspects of metacognitive processes. There are emerging evidences that most of the cognitive processes decline with age but the kind of trajectory metacognitive ability, like self-efficacy, follows as a function of age is yet researchable. The present study aimed at assessing how self-efficacy related to one’s ability on the cognitive process of verbal fluency changes with age. For this purpose, three groups with 12 participants in each group ie the young adults, middle-aged adults, and old-aged adults were subjected to letter fluency (LF)-flexibility and category fluency (CF)-flexibility tasks. In addition to perform- ing the tasks, the participants of all groups did a pre-task prediction and a post-task judgment of their respective performances. The differences between predictions, judgments, and actual performances of all subjects were subjected to repeated measure ANOVA and post hoc paired T-test for each group. The results obtained revealed that the verbal fluency performance declined with the age. However, the self-efficacy for verbal fluency, measured by predictions and judgments, revealed that as the individuals grow old, they seem to become more aware of their limited performances. These results open the scope of studying metacognitive processes like self-efficacy on larger samples and variety of cognitive processes that may be significant for cognitive communicative assessment and intervention. Aerodynamic Measures in Wind Instrument Players.

ABSTRACT: Aerodynamic Measures in Wind Instrument Players Introduction: Singing and musical performances are one of the basic human social activities. Although singing is older, wind instruments appeared at least 20,000 years ago1. Training in voluntary breath control is essential in playing wind instruments. An important aspect in professional training is the management of “breath support”. Wind instrument players require larger lung volumes for effective playing. There is very little understanding of aerodynamic measures of voice in wind instrument players used by the Indian population. Method: The clinical group consisted of ten adult male saxophone players in the age range of 18 to 40 years. The control group consisted of ten age matched adult males. The aerodynamic measures peak flow, vital capacity and phonation quotient was measured. Results: The results revealed significant differences for the aerodynamic measures between the wind instrument players and non-wind instrument participants.
