Dr. Raghavendra Rao awarded Commonwealth academic fellowship

Dr. Raghavendra Rao, Additional Professor, Department of Dermatology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal was awarded ‘Commonwealth academic fellowship 2011’ by the Academy of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and British Council, United Kingdom (UK). He underwent six months training in the field of ‘Immunodermatology’ at St. John’s Institute of Dermatology, attached to Guy’s and St. Thomas’ hospital, London, UK, from November 2011 to April 2012.
During his tenure, he acquired in depth knowledge of management of patients with immunobullous disorders, which included use of monoclonal antibodies (rituximab) and intravenous immunoglobulin. He also had an opportunity to perform newer diagnostic tests like immunofluorescence, ELISA, and immunoblotting for these conditions. Besides, he attended other dedicated speciality clinics for, psoriasis, epidermolysis bullosa (EB), genetic skin diseases and pediatric dermatology. He also visited ‘EB Haus’ in Salzburg, Austria for a period of one week during the fellowship. This is a completely dedicated centre doing clinical, academic and research in the field of EB and it is only one of its kind of in the whole world.
