MAHE Manipal Hosts Marathon for Mental Health on World Mental Health Day

The Department of Student Affairs at MAHE Manipal organised a highly successful Marathon for Mental Health on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10th. The event, which began at 4:00 PM in Manipal, aimed to raise awareness about mental health and underscore MAHE’s commitment to promoting well-being within the community. More than 1,000 participants from various institutions, including students, faculty, and staff, came together for this significant cause.

The marathon was officially flagged off by Lt. Gen. Dr. M. D. Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor of MAHE, who also addressed the gathering. In his speech, Dr. Venkatesh emphasised the institution’s proactive stance on mental health, stating, “Mental health is an integral part of overall health. Through this marathon and other initiatives, we aim to create an environment where discussions around mental health are normalised and support is easily accessible. Together, we can break the stigma surrounding mental health.”

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Dr. Sharath Rao, Pro Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, MAHE, Dr. Raviraja N S, Chief Operating Officer, MAHE, and Dr. P. Giridhar Kini, Registrar, MAHE, who attended as Guests of Honor. Corporate sponsors also played a vital role in supporting this noble cause, with Bell O Seal as the title sponsor, represented by Mr. Ashok Kumar, Director of Technical and Operations. He expressed his pride in supporting the initiative, stating, “Bell O Seal is honoured to contribute to this important cause. Mental health awareness is essential, and we are proud to be part of an event that encourages dialogue and understanding within the community.”

In addition, prominent banks contributed to the event, represented by officials including Mr. Vidyadhar Shetty and Roshan Kumar from Bank of Baroda; Mr. Vadiraj K from Karnataka Bank; Mr. Rajeev V. C from Federal Bank; Mr. B. Suresh from Axis Bank; and Ms. Sheeba, Regional Head of Canara Bank. Their participation further highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing mental health issues.

The event was also attended by notable figures such as Mr. Devaraj, Inspector of Manipal Police Station, and Dr. P. V. Bhandary, Medical Director and Psychiatrist at A. V. Baliga Hospital Udupi, among other dignitaries. Dr. Geetha Maiya, Director of Student Affairs, MAHE, extended a warm welcome to all the attendees, emphasising the institution's dedication to supporting mental health. She stated, “It is our responsibility to ensure that our students have a healthy balance in all aspects of their lives. This marathon is a small but significant step towards fostering a culture that prioritises mental health.”

Participants were treated to a range of vibrant cultural performances, adding a festive atmosphere to the occasion. These included captivating folk music and dance by the Kalamayam team from Udupi, performances by the Katpadi Chende team, and a traditional display by the Mande Vesha team from Parkala. Students from MCHP, MAHE Manipal also performed, bringing energy and color to the event.

The program was emceed by Dr. Reena Sherin, Associate Professor, KMC Manipal, and Dr. Everil Jacklin Fernades, Assistant Professor, DoC MAHE Manipal, who kept the audience engaged throughout the evening.

Organised with the aim of spreading awareness about mental health challenges, the Marathon for Mental Health was a resounding success. With over 1,000 participants showing their support, the event not only fostered a deeper understanding of mental health issues but also showcased MAHE’s continued commitment to the well-being of its students and the broader community.
