Formula Manipal – A learning process

To Conceptualize, Design, Fabricate, Test and Race a Single-seater, Formula-style Race car.

Formula Manipal is one of Manipal Institute of Technology’s most successful and prestigious technical projects. It is a team dedicated to build a car that can compete with the best all over the world. Incepted in 2007, it is entirely student-run and self-sufficient. The entire project - right from car design to the actual manufacturing of some parts - is handled by the students themselves.

Formula Manipal takes part in Formula SAE competitions organized by SAE International all over the world and also in Formula Bharath every year. Being one of the most prestigious international engineering competitions in the world, the objective is to teach the students to quickly and cleverly deal with problems that may arise during their work.

At Formula Manipal, the students are encouraged to come up with innovative ideas to improve upon their car design. The main aim of the students is to make a lighter, faster and safer car which would exceed expectations and create waves on the international circuit. It is with this in mind that they have indulged in researching several technologies that would help improve the car.

Formula Manipal follows a very thorough design process. Analysis of the previous cars is done and a preliminary design made for the next car. The design is validated for manufacture and for assembly using analysis software and prototype models, after the success of which the design is finalized and the manufacturing of the parts begun. Before this, it is made sure that every design is thoroughly checked and validated so that it doesn’t create problems in the future.

Formula Manipal has been improving every year. Having made seven cars since inception, they have steadily gained recognition on the international circuit and have won laurels. In 2013, Formula Manipal took part in two international competitions - Formula Student Germany and Formula Student Czech Republic. At Germany, they stood 2nd in the Cost and Manufacturing report event. This was their first podium finish ever and they will be looking forward to many more in the coming years.

Formula Manipal car racing team has participated in the Formula Student India (FSI) formula student car design competition, organised by FSI from 19th to 25th January 2015 at Coimbatore.  36 teams from all over the India have participated in the event. Altogether formula Manipal Team bagged 7 prizes. It is heartening to see that our team secured the runners-up position in the overall prize tally.
