Overview

The Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery Department at Manipal was established in 1961. In April 1970, it was the first centre in Karnataka and the second in South India to perform open-heart operations. Regular open-heart surgery programs, however, commenced from June 1978 with Dr. Pitambar Shatapathy, performing as the chief Cardiac surgeon. A three-year MCh course in the specialty was also started by Dr. Shatapathy in 1981.

The Department offers Surgical  training in all aspects of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgeries. Recognized by the Medical Council of India. Excellent facilities with top class Operation theatre, sophisticated equipment’s, grand infrastructure and internationally trained faculty. The MCh degree program commenced in 1981 and till date 30 students have successfully completed the course.

About the Area of Study

Cardio-Thoracic Surgery is a specialized branch of Surgery. It deals with the surgical treatment of Heart, Lungs and Vascular diseases, treatment of elective and emergency open-heart surgery and diagnosis of diseases by Bronchoscopy/ Mediastinoscopy along with Management of Emergency Thoracic and Vascular Trauma.
