Overview

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) – head and neck surgery, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal started postgraduate training in 1971 and has brought out many outstanding ENT surgeons since then. The department, attached to a tertiary care hospital, caters to patients from Goa to Kerala. It provides comprehensive care to patients with diseases of the ear, nose, throat and head and neck, the anatomic limits being the dura above and the pleura below. This department was the first in India to start a Cochlear implant program in 1995 with a 22 Channel Cochlear implant electrode. The department is well known for the management of head and neck cancers since 1985 and has a large series of Total laryngopharyngoesophagectomy with Gastric transposition surgeries. This department also has the credit of introducing endoscopic sinus surgery in 1989. This department has been performing KTP laser assisted surgeries for treatment of various head and neck lesions including cancers since 1999.

Collaborations

Inter-departmental research work involving clinical pharmacology, radiology, audiology and speech language pathology is being encouraged and undertaken. The department also encourages faculty members to engage themselves in multicentric clinical trials also.

Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) - Head and Neck surgery is a branch that deals with the medical and surgical management of ear, nose and throat ailments including head and neck conditions cancers. This branch also deals with conditions involving the skull base, like tumours, infections and trauma.
