Overview
The Department of Nephrology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, serves as a tertiary-care referral centre for coastal and interior Karnataka, North Kerala and Goa. It provides services covering the gamut of clinical Nephrology including treating OPD patients, Inpatients, critical care Nephrology, acute kidney injury, kidney transplantation and performs all nephrology procedures such as kidney biopsies, central venous catheterization both temporary and tunnelled, Haemodialysis, continuous therapies, peritoneal dialysis both acute and CAPD. It is a recognised teaching centre for Nephrology and supports research related to Nephrology.
The department of Nephrology is one of the oldest departments in this region with experienced faculty available for consultation full time. The department is part of Manipal Academy of Higher Education which is renowned for imparting medical education for the last six decades. The emphasis on bedside teaching, imparting practical skills and an excellent library, both physical and digital, make learning at Manipal easy. The department itself practices all aspects of clinical nephrology and students have access to vast and varied amounts clinical material through the attached 2000-bed Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. As such the learning process is facilitated and mentored by a dedicated faculty and support staff.

About the Area of Study
Nephrology is considered to be one of the most challenging sub-specialties of internal medicine. It deals with the study of diseases of kidney, genitalia and urinary tract, including fluid and electrolyte disturbances and hypertension, systemic conditions that affect the kidneys like diabetes mellitus and the care of those requiring renal replacement therapy, including dialysis and renal transplant.
