International Yoga Day 2021
Yoga helps to integrate the mind, body and soul. International Yoga Day is an annual event commemorated every year on 21 June from 2014, when a resolution to adopt June 21 as the International Yoga Day proposed by India was supported by 177 nations at the UN. Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE, Manipal conducted a webinar as part of International Yoga Day 2021. The topic for the webinar was “Advantages of Yoga and Ayurveda in Modern Life”. Dr Sunil Kumar (BAMS, ND), chief physician at AyurAshram, Pachalloor post, Thiruvananthapuram delivered the webinar. A total of 67 participants with different professional backgrounds have attended the session. Dr Sunil Kumar spoke about yoga, different postures for yoga and their benefits, certain practice tips while performing yoga, relaxation, and meditation. He also emphasised the special precautions to be taken by people diagnosed with abdominal hernia, arthritis, back or neck pain, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, depression, epilepsy, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity while practising yoga. He talked extensively on Ayurveda with special emphasis on Panchakarma therapy and its benefits. He elaborated on Abhyanga, Pizhichil, Gandoosha, Sirodhara, Snehaavagaha, Tharpana and different other Ayurvedic treatment procedures. He also highlighted the importance of herbal remedies in maintaining wellness. This webinar was conducted as instructed by University Grant Commission (UGC) vide its Circular dated 14th June 2021 and was coordinated by Dr Jyothi Chakrabarty Professor & Head, Dept. of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE, Manipal.
