Report on Awareness programme on ‘Harmful effects of substance use’

Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON, MAHE organised an awareness program on ‘Harmful effects of substance use’ on 03.11.2023 from3.30 PM to 4.30 PM at U S Nayak High School, Patla, Udupi, for the students and teachers as part of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. T.M.A. Pai.

Young people who persistently abuse substances often experience an array of problems, including academic difficulties, health-related problems (including mental health), poor peer relationships, and involvement with the juvenile justice system. Additionally, there are consequences for family members, the community, and the entire society.

Ms. Asha K. Nayak, Assistant Professor-Sr. Scale, Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON, MAHE, was the resource person. Mrs Asha highlighted the harmful effects of consuming various substances and the ways to prevent them. She also emphasized that the relapse can be prevented if the person gets adequate attention and support from family members and treatment from mental health professionals. There was also an interactive session and video presentation on the harmful effects of substance use. Mr. Srikanth Prabhu, Headmaster, U S Nayak High School, Patla welcomed and thanked the organizers and participants. Dr. Tessy Treesa Jose, Associate Dean, MCON & HoD, Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, Mrs. Flavia S. Noronha, Assistant Professor, and Ms. Sanju Pant, Lecturer, Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON, MAHE were also present during the program. A total of 105 students and six teachers attended the programme. It was based on SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing.
