UNAIDS observes World AIDS Day on December 1 and the theme for this year is; “Hands up for Prevention”. It is an opportunity for every community to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV and remember those who have died.
MCON firmly believes that the future generation has the ability to sensitize others and prevent spread of HIV. And, therefore, apart from the events held for students of MCON, an awareness programme was also held for the youth in Smt. Rukmini Shedthi Memorial National Government First Grade College, Barkur.
The Quiz and Collage competitions for BSc, PBBSc and M. Sc. Nursing students were based on AIDS theme and its awareness. The first prize for Quiz was secured by Mr Sumit Kumar Gupta, Ms Charvi Sharma and Mr Abhinav Anand and the second prize by Ms Amrutha Jimmy, Ms Chinnumol George and Ms Julie Maria. Of the six teams that took part in the collage competition, the best two were awarded. Ms Anjaly Ann Sabu, Ms Aleesha Sunny and Ms Priyanka Joy bagged first prize and Ms Rishika Thapa, Ms Fiona D’souza and Ms Samina Gurung got second prize.
An interactive session on HIV and AIDS was held for the first year BSc Nursing students, and Dr. Mamatha S Pai, HOD of Child Health Nursing department was the resource person. She emphasized on HIV transmission, staging, stigma, prevention, treatment, and role of nurses in overcoming stigma and discrimination.
As an outreach to the community on AIDS awareness, a skit by first year BSc Nursing students was arranged for the youth of Smt Rukmini Shedthi Memorial National Government First Grade College, Barkur. Around 350 students along with school authorities, public and ASHA workers attended the programme. This was organized in collaboration with District Aids Prevention and Control Division, District Health and Welfare department.
An extempore competition was also held for the students of Manipal College of Nursing Manipal on 2nd December, 2016. Ms. Drago Melba Basel secured first and Ms. Atteena Thomas secured second. All these events were coordinated by Mrs. Charlet Jasmine Vaz and Ms. Roseminu Varghese.
