Report on Advanced Skill Lab Workshop

The Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing at Manipal College of Nursing, in collaboration with the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine Manipal branch, organized an advanced Skill Lab Competency workshop for postgraduate nursing students across India (NPCC & MSc) on 13 and 14 July 2023. Dr Sharath Kumar Rao K, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Health Science, was the chief guest for the inaugural function. There were 30 participants from across India. The two-day workshop aimed to achieve Sustainable Development Goals three and four: good health and well-being, and quality education. During the first day of the workshop, various sessions were conducted by experts in their respective fields. Dr. Souvik Chaudhuri, Associate Professor of the Department of Critical Care Medicine at KMC Manipal, conducted a session on Airway Assessment and Management. This was followed by a session on ACLS by Dr. Daisy J Lobo, Associate Professor at MCON Manipal. The final session before lunch was on Arterial and Central Line Insertion, which was conducted by Dr. Margi T Bhatt, Assistant Professor of the Department of Critical Care Medicine at KMC Manipal. During the first day workshop, Dr. Melita Sheilini, Assistant Professor -Selection Grade MCON Manipal, conducted a session on ABG Interpretation after lunch. After the session, the workshop participants were split into three groups for hands-on training on Intubation and airway management, arterial and central line insertion, and ACLS under the guidance of subject experts Dr Souvik, Dr. Vishal, and Dr. Daisy. The workshop's second day commenced with Dr. Vimal Krishnan, an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at MCON Manipal, conducting a session on Trauma Assessment. This was followed by Dr. Soumya Christabel, a Senior Scale Assistant Professor at MCON Manipal, discussing Emergency Management of Shock, and Dr. Jyothi Chakrabarty, the Professor & Head of the Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing at MCON Manipal, conducting a session on Emergency Drugs. Dr. Vishal Shanbhag, an Associate Professor in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at KMC Manipal and the Medical Preceptor for the NPCC program, concluded the day by conducting a session on Pocus for Shock and providing hands-on training on ICD insertion. At the valedictory session, participants expressed their happiness and congratulated the organizers for arranging a hands-on training workshop to enhance their skills. They also suggested that the organizing team should continue to conduct such workshops in the future. Certificates were issued to all participants during the valedictory session.
