Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat will get accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health. People are generally considered obese when their body mass index(BMI), a measurement obtained by dividing a person's weight by the square of the person's height, is over 30 kg/m2, with the range 25–30 kg/m2 defined as overweight. Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.
From 1980 to 2013, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children increased by nearly 50%. Currently 10% of children worldwide are either overweight or obese. In 2014, the World Health Organization established a high-level commission to end childhood obesity.
In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults aged 18 years and older were overweight. Of these over 600 million adults were obese. The world prevalence of obesity doubled between 1980 and 2014. Among children 8-23% are obese.

The programme commenced with prayer song and welcome speech by Ms.Dorjee Youdon, 4th year BSc Nursing student followed by an interactive session by Dr Shashidhara Y N. He stressed on the global burden of obesity and how each member in the society contributes to this burden. He advised students to take healthy foods and keep themselves healthy.
Students of 4th year B.Sc (N) performed Role play on ill effects of junk food and importance of healthy food which is followed by Health talk by Ms.Bharthi, 4thyear B.Sc(N) student on causes, risk factors, complication, treatment and prevention of obesity.
The school students actively participated in aerobic exercises and group song on obesity conducted by 4th year BSc Nursing students.
A total of 60 students participated in the programme. Ms Shilpa of 4th year BSc Nursing conveyed thanks to the gathering.
The programme was organized by Faculty and 4th year BSc Nursing students of Manipal College of Nursing Manipal (MCON) and was coordinated by Mrs.Reshma R Kotian Lecturer, Dept of Community Health Nursing, MCON Manipal.
