January 28, 2023
As part of National Voters’ Day, Manipal College of Nursing Manipal organized an awareness session on the topic on 20th January 2023 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in the Basic Science building, 3rd floor, LH2, MAHE Manipal.
Prof. Surendranath Shetty, Retired HoD, Department of Political Science MGM College, Udupi, the Resource Person for the session said voting rights to be accepted as a basic need of human life. He said, only the voters who elect their representatives have the right to question anything that goes wrong. All the voters are considered wise citizens of the country and hence all the youth and citizens of the country need to enroll their names in the electoral list. From his experience, he opined that rural voters outnumber urban voters. He urged that every employee in every organization should have the accountability and responsibility to vote despite their busy schedules. The session highlighted the rights of a prisoner who has the right to be a contestant for election and the right to vote. He clarified students’ doubts about various aspects of being a good citizen of this country by actively interacting with them. Professor Surendranath Shetty appreciated the students for their enthusiasm and inquisitiveness to learn more about the country’s electoral system and citizens’ responsibility.
Dr. Elsa Sanatombi Devi, Professor, Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing coordinated the session. A total of 160 students were present for the session.
