Continuing Dental Education on “Head and Neck Cancer: A Multidisciplinary Update”

The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, in association with the Department of Pharmacology, Kasturba Medical College,Mangalore, organized a thought-provoking Continuous Dental Education (CDE) Programme on “Head and Neck Cancer: A Multidisciplinary Update” on the 30th of October, 2014 at Lecture hall -1, Ground floor, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Attavar, Mangalore.

The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, in association with the Department of Pharmacology, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, organized a thought-provoking Continuous Dental Education (CDE) Program on “Head and Neck Cancer: A Multidisciplinary Update” on the 30th of  October, 2014 at Lecture hall -1, Ground floor, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Attavar, Mangalore. The CDE aimed at providing a forum for discussion on Head and Neck Cancer which is plaguing the society.

The event was inaugurated with the auspicious lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, Dean, KMC, Mangalore, Dr M.V.Prabhu. Dr. Ashok Shenoy K, Professor & Head, Department of Pharmacology,KMC Mangalore welcomed the august gathering and introduced the objectives of the CME to the delegates.

The dignitaries on the dais, Dr.  M. V. Prabhu, Dean, KMC Mangalore, Dr. Dilip G. Naik, Dean, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, shared their thoughts on the CDE.  Dr Junaid Ahmed delivered the vote of thanks.

The entire day’s deliberations were divided into five sessions headed by eminent speakers in their respective fields. The inaugural talk of the scientific session “Head & Neck Cancer: An Epidemiology” was delivered by Dr. B. Unnikrishnan, Professor & Head, Department of Community Medicine, KMC, Mangalore.

He was followed by the next speaker for the day, Dr. Krishna Prasad,Associate Professor, Department of Medical Oncology, KMC, Mangalore, who spoke on “Targeted Therapy: Where we are today”. 

The next talk of the day was by Dr Ashok Shenoy, Professor & Head, Department of Head & Neck Surgery, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore, who enthralled the audience with a talk on Recent advances in Surgical Management of Head & Neck Cancers which was very beneficial to all the participants for its advanced information about various management modalities in head and neck cancer.

Dr Tanveer Pasha, Associate Professor, Department of Radiotherapy, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore, spoke on the Optimizing Radiation Therapy in the Indian Scenario .The insights provided by Dr Tanveer was very resourceful for all the delegates present and the audience was briefed about the latest modalities in the management of Head and neck cancer by radiation therapy.

The last talk of the day was By Dr Keerthilatha M Pai who spoke on Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders. The audience were elaborately informed about the various Premalignant disorders and the current concepts in the management of these hazardous lesions of the Oral cavity which have a high rate of turning into a malignancy.

This was followed by lunch and the afternoon session which was also the concluding session consisted of a panel discussion about the current concepts and doubts about the origin and management of Head & Neck Cancer.

The moderator for the session was Dr Ashok shenoy and the panelists were Dr Keerthilatha Pai, Dr Tanveer Pasha,Dr Krishna Prasad and Dr Suja. The audience interaction was very heartening and the panelists discussed and answered various doubts put forward by the delegates and were very satisfied at their doubts being cleared by the panelists.

The  total no. of CME participants were 200 in number.
