World No Tobacco Day 2018

The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, in association with Indian Dental Association, Dakshina Kannada branch, undertook various activities to commemorate the World No Tobacco Day 2018. Tobacco Cessation Clinic of the Department of Public Health Dentistry, MCODS, Mangalore, known as ImpACT: Implementing Activities for Cessation of Tobacco, also participated in the events.

An Oral Health and Oral Cancer Awareness Program and Anti-Tobacco Campaign was organized at BC Road on 26th May, 2018. The program included free oral health examination, screening for tobacco use and oral cancer and precancerous lesions and conditions. The participants were given pamphlets for increasing awareness among them. Common people visiting the camp participated enthusiastically in the program. 

World No Tobacco Day 2018 events also included intercollegiate competitions for medical and dental students from various institutions in and around Mangalore. Competitions included poster, t-shirt designing, street play and quiz competitions, which were organized at Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Attavar campus, Mangalore on 30th May 2018. These activities was organized with the purpose of increasing awareness in anti-tobacco activities among the student community.

Quiz on tobacco use was conducted by Dr. Prasanna Mithra, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore; and Dr. Mithun Pai BH, Associate Professor, Department of Public Health Dentistry, MCODS, Mangalore. Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials generated by these events can be utilized for various anti-tobacco initiatives in the community. A total of 79 students participated in various competitions with zeal and enthusiasm.

The event was also attended by Dr. Premalatha Shetty, Associate Dean, MCODS, Mangalore; Dr. Rajesh G, Professor & Head, Department of Public Health Dentistry, MCODS, Mangalore; Dr. Karthik Shetty, President Elect, Indian Dental Association, Dakshina Kannada branch, Mangalore and Additional Professor, Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endocontics, MCODS, Mangalore.

The team of students from MCODS, Mangalore who had won the first prize in street play competition in intercollegiate competitions on tobacco on 30.06.2018 performed their prize winning act on 31.06.2018. The venue was City Centre Mall, Mangalore, which is one of the popular shopping malls in Mangalore. The purpose of this program was to spread awareness about the ill-effects of tobacco use among the general population. The street play performance was well received by the audience that gathered at the mall.

A two-day workshop on motivational interviewing was organized on 01.06.2018 and 02.06.2018. Motivational Interviewing is one of the most effective and widely used techniques for tobacco cessation, alcohol and substance abuse. The resource persons for the workshop included Mr. Syam K Ravindran, Assistant Professor, Department of Clinical Psychology, School of Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS), Manipal; Mr. Dan Issac Pothiyil, Assistant Professor, Department of Clinical Psychology, SOAHS, Manipal; and Mr. Sujith Babu, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore.

The workshop involved intense hands-on training and interactive sessions to help the participants understand the fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing and implement them in tobacco cessation. The program was well-appreciated by all the participants.
