About the Department

Medicine Department was established in the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal in the early sixties. Department became official academic department in Aug 1969 when clinical section of KMC Manipal was inaugurated. The department is known for the strength of its teaching program which attracts postgraduates from all over India. It is one of the most sought-after MD training programs. Department caters to a variety of clinical cases providing excellent immersive learning experience for postgraduates. The department is involved in the care of critical ill patients who come from all over Karnataka as the ICUs are well equipped. Also, with highly motivated experienced faculty department is well known for diagnosis and management of common, uncommon, complex and challenging cases. The staff in the department run various specialty clinics such as diabetes mellitus, HIV, thyroid, connective tissue disease, Lipidology and Life style Medicine.

The Department of Medicine is one of the largest departments of the college providing excellent clinical services, imparting extensive UG and PG training and actively undertaking research activities.

The clinical activities of the department include running two parallel OPDs daily which cater to about 600 patients visiting the hospital and managing 240 inpatient beds in general ward and 50 ICU patients daily.

The department imparts PG training for 72 junior residents (total as on May 2021) in a structured training programme which involves rotation through subspecialties.

The undergraduate training is offered as per NMC guidelines in the form of didactic lectures, small group teaching and clinical postings. Department is fully prepared for new CBME curriculum for UG and PG Medicine Program.

The research activity of the department includes major projects with grants, PG Thesis and student projects. The faculty and students of the department have reputation of publishing in various national and international journals and present papers in various scientific conferences.

The Department is actively involved in updating its staff and postgraduates by conducting several CMEs, Guest Lectures and Conferences every year. KAPICON 2020 is one such endeavor to bring together the best of knowledgeable speakers delivering talks on a variety of the topics to help physicians to update themselves.

Achievements

KAPICON 2020.

In 2020, the API (Association of Physician of India) Udupi – Manipal Chapter in Association with Department of Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education conducted KAPICON in Manipal. 580 physicians and postgraduates had registered for this conference. The postgraduate paper presentation part of conference was conducted on October 17th & 18th 2020 virtually.
