About the Department

The Department of Neurology is one of the oldest academic Neurology departments in Karnataka. Established in the early 1980’s in association with Neurosurgery.  Professor Dr. S. N. Rao joined as the Neurophysician and Head of Neurology starting the department officially on 6th November 1981. Over the years the department has provided best services in costal Karnataka catering to the needs of patient care from Uttarakannada, Udupi, Shimoga, Chikmagalore, Davangere, Ballari district of Karnataka.

The department has strived to provide state of the art care for patients with neurological disorders that includes emergency services like IV thrombolysis/carotid stenting for Stroke. The department works in multidisciplinary collaboration with Neurosurgery, Radiology, Neuro-rehabilitation, Psychiatry and General Medicine with sole aim to provide best and quality patient care at affordable costs. The faculty are committed to teaching, research and patient care.

Evolution and Mile stones

1981 Predominantly started and devoted to General Neurology OPD and inpatient services.

1987 EEG and NCV / EMG Lab started.

1992 DM programme was started.

1992 Neurology ICU care.

1992 Electrophysiology certificate course started.

2007 Subspecialty clinic in Neuro-muscular disease.

2014 Subspecialty Epilepsy Clinic.

2014 PhD programme started in department.

2015 Video EEG followed by comprehensive epilepsy surgery and epilepsy care centre started under the guidance of internationally renowned and pioneer in the field of Epilepsy Dr. Kurupath Radhakrishnan.

2015 Started performing intraoperative Electrocorticography (ECoG) and Cortical Stimulation and Mapping (CSM) during epilepsy surgery.

2016 Subspecialty Movement Disorder and Botox Clinic.

2016 Subspecialty Stroke Clinic and IV/IA Thrombolysis in stroke with stroke unit started.

2017 Dementia Clinic.

2018 Neurology Research Unit - A Clinical Research Unit (CRU) has been established under the aegis of the department (Dhanvantari ward, Kasturba Hospital), for coordinating various extramural and student research projects.

Excellence in Education:

Kasturba Medical College is the first private institute in the country started DM Neurology training program since 1992 with intake of 2 candidates per year.  It has successfully trained more than 42 Neurologists over the years and has produced leading neurologists in various parts of the country.  The training program consists of comprehensive regular academic sessions, bedside teaching with exposure and standard approach as well as treatment of neurological disorders including emergency cases like Stroke, and also undergo comprehensive training in electrophysiology procedures making them confident practitioners in the field of Neurology.

The department boasts of providing emergency services like IV thrombolysis for acute stroke management and state of art electrophysiology labs that includes video EEG lab that evaluates patients for epilepsy surgery.

Dr. Majaz Moonis, Professor, Department of Neurology & Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, USA, visited department of Neurology in November 2018.

1.   He discussed about collaborative projects between University of Massachusetts Medical School and Kasturba Medical College & Hospital, MAHE, Manipal.

2.   He delivered a talk on “Recent advances in acute stroke treatment” And “Current stroke preventive strategies”.

 

 

Dementia Symposium

Dr. Neela Patel, Associate Professor with Tenure, and Chief of the Division of Geriatrics & Palliative Care in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, visited department of Neurology in December 2018.

Department deals with comprehensive and quality patient care including emergency and OPD services. We also have dedicated days to cater various types of neurological disorders by expert faculty in their respective fields which includes the following

Lab services:

The Neurology department has: -

1.   Two SEEG (19 channel and 21 channel, Nihon-Kordhen).

2.   One portable SEEG (21 channel, Nicolet) which is also used for intra-operative EEG monitoring.

3.   Electrocorticography instrument (Nicolet)(ECoG), for tailoring cortical resection in epilepsy surgery.

4.   Cortical stimulator & mapping instrument (Nicolet) for cortical mapping when operating on the eloquent cortex.

5.   Three bedded VEEG/LTM (32channel, Nicolet) suits, with long term monitoring facility for pre surgical evaluation of drug resistant epilepsy.

Clinical trials

1.    Title: Establishment of Indian Stroke Clinical Trial Network

Description: A multicenter initiative funded by ICMR, Government of India for designing various comprehensive programmes for managing acute stroke.

Coordinating centre: CMC, Ludhiana

 

2.    Title: Secondary Prevention by Structured Semi-Interactive Stroke Prevention Package in INDIA (SPRINT INDIA)

Description: A multicenter randomized clinical trial aimed at exploring the role of patient education in acute stroke management outcome. This trial is funded by ICMR, Government of India.

Coordinating centre: CMC, Ludhiana

 

3.    Title: Fever, Hyperglycemia, Swallowing and Hypertension Management in Acute Stroke: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial (Indian Quality Improvement in Stroke Care Study) (FeSSH)

Description: FeSSH is a multicenter cluster randomized controlled trial under the aegis of ICMR, Government of India. This clinical trial aims at developing a new comprehensive interdisciplinary management package for patients diagnosed with acute stroke. Dr. TMA Pai Hospital, Udupi and District Hospital, Udupi are also a part of this clinical trial network.

4.    Title: A Randomized, Double-blind, Multicenter, Placebo-controlled Phase 3 Study with Open-label Period to Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of Inebilizumab in Adults with Myasthenia Gravis (MINT Trial).

Description: To assess whether inebilizumab can reduce MG-related disability.  Primary endpoint: Change from baseline in Myasthenia Gravis Activities of Daily Living (MG-ADL) Profile score at end of the RCP (Week 52 for AChR-Ab+ population and Week 26 for MuSK-Ab+ population).
