About the Department

The department of Pediatrics is primarily concerned with the delivery of health care to children who come to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and Dr. T.M.A. Pai Health complex, Udupi & Karkala.  Clinical activities relate to in-patient and outpatient care including the newborn nursery.  The department serves as a referral center for the weekly and monthly outreach programs.

The department functions as four units - 3 general Pediatrics units and 1 neonatal unit, each headed by a Professor.  The staff, postgraduate students and house surgeons are assigned to the respective units by the Head of the Department.

A number of extension programs such as school health are also going on in the outlying areas and form an important part of the departmental activities.  The purpose of the training program is also to make one realize that hospitals are centers of health activities for the whole community - and should not remain isolated as ivory towers - and to teach residents to be in touch with the needs of the community. The residents will be rotated to work in all these areas under close supervision initially and later with more independence, as they gain more experience.

As the residents will be working in an ISO 9001:2008 (Quality Management system) certified and NABH accredited hospital they will be trained in all aspects of quality health care. In addition to the basic training in Pediatrics, residents are also exposed to the training in Hospital associated infection control, good hospital practices, statistical analysis, dissertation work, hospital safety programs etc. which are essential components of quality health care.
