On the occasion of Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, the Department of Computer Science &Engineering, and the Department of Mathematics jointly conducted the2nd National Workshop-cum-Conference entitled Computer Applications based on Modern Algebra during 01-04 July 2017.

The event started with an Inaugural ceremony on 01 July 2017 at 9.30 AM at Sir M V Seminar Hall, MIT.  The dignitaries on the dais wereDr Narayana Sabhahit,Registrar, Manipal Academy of Higher Education as Chief Guest, Prof. P.V. Arunachalam, former president Indian Mathematical Society (IMS) & Founder Vice-Chancellor Dravidian University (A.P.) as Guest of Honor, Dr BHV Pai, Joint Director MIT,Manipal as President of function, Dr Ashalatha Nayak, HOD of Computer Science & Engineering, and Dr P. G. Bhat (HOD of Mathematics, MIT Manipal).

The period of four days of Workshop-cum-Conference was highly stimulating with inaugural talk by Prof. P.V. Arunachalam followed bysixteen invited talks by renowned speakersfrom various reputed institutions namely: Prof. J. K. Verma (Fellow INSA, Dept. of Mathematics, IIT Bombay), Prof. V. Arvind, (Director, The Institute of Mathematical Science, Chennai, Professor, Theoretical Computer Science), Prof. Kapil Hari Paranjape (Recipient  of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Science & Technology award in India by CSIR, Govt. of India; Professor- IISER Mohali), Prof. K. N. Raghavan (The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai), Prof. A.J. Jayanthan (Goa University), Prof. Bhavanari Satyanarayana (A.P. Scientist Awardee DST, F.A.P.A.S., Dept. of Mathematics, ANU),Dr U. C. Niranjan(Manipal Dot Net Pvt Ltd.), Prof. B. R. Shankar (Dept. of MACS, N.I.T.K, Surathkal), Prof. A.R. Rajan (Director, State Institute of Encyclopaedic Publications and Emeritus Professor, University of Kerala), Prof. S. D. Madhu Kumar (HOD, Dept. of Comp. Sci.& Engg. NIT Calicut), Prof. K. Manjunatha Prasad (Department of Statistics, Manipal Academy of Higher Education), Prof. T. Vasanthi (Yogi Vemana University, Kadapa), Prof. Dukkipati Ambedkar(Dept. Comp. Sci. & Automation, I.I.Sc. Bangalore). There were talks by Dr Srikanth Prabhu (MIT Manipal),Dr Kedukodi Babushri Srinivas (MIT Manipal) and a special session on Mathemagimusic by Mr Raghavendra.

The National Workshop-cum-Conference highlighted the concepts from modern algebra and demonstrated their applications in computer science. It was encouraging to note that computer algebra has evolved as a discipline linking advanced algebra to methods of computer science and thus offering many tools. The workshop-cum-conference focused on algorithms and algebraic computations, finite fields and applications, algebraic codes, soft computing techniques, algebraic cryptography, and recent developments in these areas.  The event provided an ideal platform for the faculty, researchers, and the students in the various disciplines of science and engineering to reinforce their knowledge. The participants of this National Workshop-cum-Conference benefited from recent trends of modern algebra and its applications. The latest research work was presented in the invited sessions / short communication sessions of the conference.

Prof. Dr G. K. Prabhu, Director, MIT & Pro-Vice Chancellor, Technology, and Management Manipal Academy of Higher Education has interacted with Invited Speakers on the recent developments of the theme in a meeting held during a day of the conference.  Furthermore, the director has mentioned in his message that the computers never came into their own until imparting the advances of mathematics and formal logics. He added that, Logic and Algebra are the mathematical foundation of computers, since many of the functions and operators in all programming languages require some knowledge in both the fields. He also said that, Modern Algebra is a fascinating subject and it has vital importance in computer applications. He emphasized that Computer Sciences heavily rely on algorithms, which the latter in turn heavily relies on mathematics.

The event was concluded with an Valedictory function held on 04 July 2017 at 2.15 PM at Sir M V Seminar Hall, MIT.  The dignitaries on the dais were Prof. V. Arvind, Director & Professor of Theoretical Computer Science, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai as Chief Guest, Prof. C. Ramesha, Chairman Diamond Jubilee celebrations MIT as Guest of Honor, Prof. Somashekhar Bhat, Associate Director – Development, MIT as President of function, Dr Ashalatha Nayak, HOD of Computer Science & Engineering, and Dr P. G. Bhat (HOD of Mathematics, MIT Manipal.

The organizing committee acknowledged Prof. Dr G. K. Prabhu, Director, MIT & Pro-Vice Chancellor, Technology, and Management Manipal Academy of Higher Education for his kind encouragement and support, the University Officials for their whole-hearted support in providing necessary facilities, Dr B H V Pai, Joint Director MIT Manipal for his support, timely advices and motivations, all the faculty and staff members of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Department of Mathematics, and Security staff officials of MIT.

The National Workshop - cum - Conference was supported by funding agencies Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB-DST Govt. of India), National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM-DAE, Govt. of India), Indian National Science Academy (INSA, Govt. of India), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO, Govt. of India), and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR, Govt. of India).
