The main objective was to give young men and women of exceptional talent opportunities to develop through study, research, travel and practical training, their capabilities at a relatively early age so as to enable them to provide in time the kind of leadership India requires in various fields.

Mr. Menon has received the fellowship for his project to study the ancient landscapes inhabited and modified by early man in northern Karnataka. The project aims to address such questions as the following: why did ancient man build structures like ashmounds and megaliths which formed the monumental constructions of Late Stone Age (Neolithic) and Iron Age man? What were the world-views of our ancestors that made them beget these forms for their creations? How was the surrounding landscape and the resources around used by these people? Are these precursors for later architecture in the region?

This project was inspired by extensive travel in the course of an earlier investigation conducted by Mr. Menon on the possible relationship of megalithic structures with astronomy, for which he had been awarded the Prof. D. S. Achyutha Rao Memorial History Research Fellowship for the year 2007. He is the first recipient of the prestigious fellowship from Manipal Academy of Higher Education. The tenure of the Fellowship lasts until February 28, 2014.
